What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

If you’re constantly catching yourself scrubbing the same dish over and over again, or engaging in seemingly irrational actions that seem to sooth your anxiety, you may be suffering from an anxiety disorder called Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a relatively common anxiety disorder, affecting six million Americans. When somebody suffers from high levels of anxiety, it can manifest itself in methods of avoidance, or escape. Some people deal with anxiety by developing specific fears, like of heights, or the dark. Some people’s anxiety causes physical symptoms, such as facial tics. OCD is another one of these disorders. A person with OCD with deal with his anxiety by engaging in irrational, often time-consuming or harmful, activities which he thinks will alleviate the feelings of anxiety.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder usually strikes as a primarily sexual, aggressive, or religious urge, though often it manifests itself as a relatively harmless activity, such as frequent hand washing, or stepping on certain tiles. Even when it seems benign, however, it should be addresses as a potentially harmful disorder, which should be treated, in one way or another.

If you find yourself suffering from one or more of these symptoms, you may have Obsessive-compulsive disorder. OCD is particularly distressing to its sufferers, as you can have the symptoms, feel irresistible urges to engage in these behaviors, and yet still be perfectly rational and understand that these urges are entirely irrational, yet be unable to resist. A major goal on the path to recovery for OCD sufferers is beginning to control their behaviors on their own.

Obsessive-compulsive behavior can be treated two ways, with therapy and anti-anxiety medication. The best solution, however, is parallel treatment incorporating both therapy and medication. Benzodiazepines like Valium or Klonopin are frequently prescribed to gain a foothold in fighting the anxiety before therapy has a chance to help in the long term. It’s easy to buy generic Valium or buy Klonopin online, so you can begin down the road to recovery today!
