Connecticut Laborers’ District Council Question Stamford, Connecticut Mayor Dannel Malloy’s Real Commitment To Local Jobs & Companies At Stamford’s Harbor Point Development

- Project’s Developers Building and Land Technology & Lubert-Adler Ignore Previous Pleas From State Labor Leaders To Utilize Connecticut Companies & Employees -

(Hartford, Connecticut) – Wondering why Connecticut’s largest construction project is proceeding without any commitment to hiring Connecticut companies and employees, the Connecticut Laborers’ District Council today requested that Dannel Malloy, mayor of the City of Stamford, Connecticut, stop appeasing area companies and working families and start working on creating new jobs and opportunities as the Harbor Point project is developed.

“Our request is very clear and simple. We are asking that Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy and Harbor Point’s Developers -- Building and Land Technology, its President Carl Kuehner and Lubert-Adler -- to officially take steps to start hiring Connecticut companies and Connecticut employees in the development of this huge construction project. To date, I have heard a lot of talk from Mayor Malloy, but no results. In these tough economic times, Connecticut families cannot afford to have ‘no results’ politicians in office. We need officials and good corporate citizens that understand the process of growing our state economy and helping to strengthen the standard of living for all working families here in Connecticut,” said Charles LeConche, business manager, Connecticut Laborers’ District Council.

In October 2008, more than 500 Connecticut construction workers held a statewide protest in front of the $3 billion, 7.6 million-square-foot. Harbor Point project in Stamford, CT. State and local politicians attended the event including Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut State Representative William Tong, U.S. Congressman Christopher Shays and U. S. Congressman elect-Jim Himes.

According to previous news reports, Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy stated he was very confident with Building and Land Technology's (BLT) leadership position of the Harbor Point development. BLT has shown a "strong and consistent commitment" to the city through its recent $200 million worth of purchases and renovations at 120, 260, 292 and 800 Long Ridge Road. "They know how to get things done," said Malloy.

“Yes, BLT knows how to get things done, and it’s at the expense of companies and workers in Connecticut. Mayor Malloy needs a reality check and start working on behalf of the residents who voted him into office. He most certainly should not be considering a gubernatorial bid when he cannot find any ways to develop jobs right in his own backyard,” said LeConche.

The Connecticut Laborers’ District Council, a member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America, represents approximately 8,000 members employed in the construction industry and other building and trade fields throughout the state. The Laborers’ International Union of North America, founded in 1903 largely by immigrant workers, includes more than 800,000 members who work in construction and hazardous materials remediation, as well as in healthcare, the U.S. Postal Service and other public service sectors of the economy.
