Billy Wagner played catch in the morning. Jerry Manuel said the plan is for Wagner to do two rehab games at Brooklyn this weekend and then return when eligible on Aug. 18. Obviously the Mets will breathe a huge sigh of relief (ha!) if that happens . . . Manuel hinted pretty strongly that Brian Stokes will stay and Eddie Kunz will go when John Maine is activated on Wednesday.

Leslie Byrne has endorsed Jon Bowerbank. Snark aside, I think this race between Bowerbank and Wagner will be the most fascinating of the '09 season if it shakes down this way, much moreso than the Cuccinelli/Brownlee match-up. Having read my...

OK, this is probably a moot point because we all know the National League always loses the All-Star Game anyway. The AL has won 10 in a row (plus on tie). But is Billy Wagner the most logical choice to...

On the day after the Mets found out about Billy Wagner and his injured forearm, Johan Santana pitches a complete game shutout. The Mets got Home runs from Carlos Beltran and Brian Schneider to account for most of the scoring.... David Wright and the Bullpen got a well deserved day off today............ Mets win streak goes to six, and they will finish the season series with the pirates tomorrow..........

Ok, that was a shitty headline. Sorry about that. Today the Mets announced that number 13 won’t be back on the mound anytime soon. I’m not a doctor but and sentence that starts with “increased inflammation in a tendon in Wagner’s left elbow despite rest” is usually accompanied by the phrase “requiring surgery and long [...]

I attended the Brian Moran fundraiser last night. It was a great gathering, with folks from all over Hampton Roads in attendance. The crowd was a mix of grassroots, electeds and contributors from Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and Hampton. I’m pretty bad at estimating crowd sizes but I can tell you it was [...]

Mets 7 Pirates 4 So far, the Mets are making the most of the “soft” part of their schedule. Pedro Martinez threw seven strong innings in leading the Mets to their fifth straight victory, and his fourth win of the year. Petey allowed only one run in a 95-pitch effort, scattering eight hits, walking one, and [...]

The Boston Globe has a Peter Gammons chat transcript up on its blog. Let's take a look at his nuggets of rumor wisdom. Gammons heard from someone close to Larry Lucchino that the Red Sox would not let him leave. The Red Sox could try to unload Julio Lugo in the offseason, or convince him to accept a super-utility role. Gammons says neither Hank Steinbrenner nor Brian Cashman have any interest in Manny...

While it is true that there’s little more frustrating than a bullpen-blown loss to the likes of the Bay-less, Nady-less Pittsburgh Pirates, drastic action with this closer role seems dicey. The team has already weathered more than half of Billy Wagner’s DL stint, and there’s less than a week left. So I would feel uncomfortable [...]

Joel Sherman takes a look a Jerry Manuel’s options for the final 44 games of the season. He’s laid out three interesting options: Manuel dismissed any lingering patience with his veteran relievers after a loss yesterday that was unacceptable and unfathomable. The Pirates essentially were trying to surrender at Shea, yet the Mets bullpen burned the [...]

The only surprising thing about yesterday’s bullpen meltdown at Shea, in which the quartet of Sanchez, Smith, Heilman and perpetually behind-in-the-count Scott Schoeneweis (very bad for the Jews*, even worse for the Mets) squandered a fine effort on behalf of Pedro Martinez and surrendered leads of 4-0 and 5-1 to the piss poor Pittsburgh Pirates….is [...]
