Why Apple Won’t But Adobe — John Gruber

Apple's focus includes staying "small" in size, maintaining the "best" in breed of OS, Macs, iPod, iPhone, and remaining mobile (MobileMe.com, iPod, iPhone, MacBook Air, etc.).

The Pig Leagues

John Gruber linked to an article yesterday, and his commentary made me cringe. We mentioned yesterday a rumor that Apple won’t cut a check for iPhone application developers until the dev’s share of the sales tops $250. A lot of commenters were upset about this, if it’s true: TomWBrowning said [...]

John Gruber, the sorest winner on the web when it comes...

John Gruber, the sorest winner on the web when it comes to sports or Apple, points out that I was wrong in my prediction that the Lakers would win the NBA Finals this year. I didn't actually care about the series either way...but after rooting for him in Minnesota for all those years, it sure is great to see Kevin Garnett win a championship. I was also wrong about Paul Pierce. I never liked him as...

Announcing SquirrelFish

“Hello, Internet!” WebKit’s core JavaScript engine just got a new interpreter, code-named SquirrelFish. SquirrelFish is fast—much faster than WebKit’s previous interpreter. Check out the numbers. On the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark, SquirrelFish is 1.6 times faster than WebKit’s previous interpreter. SunSpider runs per minute Longer bars are better. What Is SquirrelFish? SquirrelFish is a register-based,...

Does design education work against 'Indie Fever'?

As Michiel van Meeteren points out in 'Indie Fever' , one of the hallmarks of the independent programming community on the Mac is their willingness and desire to share tips and discoveries. Will Shipley is a good example of this - he blogs code , sets puzzles, and twitters . John Gruber of Daring Fireball is another example of what Gladwell would call a 'connector' - indeed it was via him that I found...

Apple Doing a Lot Better than Expectations

John Gruber: > Daring Fireball: I just went through Apple’s iPhone availability checker for all 50 states in the U.S.: one store in Hawaii has one model (8 GB), one store in California (out of 38 in the state) has one model (16 GB black), and the Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York has one model (16 GB white). That’s it. > So much for my “just wait a week and then cruise in and pick one up in five...

WebKit Performance on iPhone OS X 2.0

John Gruber: The results are obvious. WebKit JavaScript performance has improved steadily and significantly in just one year, with a huge jump between 1.1.4 and the new 2.0.0. And yet his MacBook Pro (which may be running a less optimized version of Safari) is still 40 times faster. Macs are fast these days.

Remote app doubles as Apple TV keyboard

I’m without an Apple TV but John Gruber of Daring Fireball fame has stumbled upon a new facet of the Remote app that no one else seems to have realized before. Apple doesn’t seem to be touting this little factoid either, but you can use your iPhone/iPod Touch instead of the janky on-screen non-QWERTY keyboard [...]

Even on EDGE, Mobile Safari 2.0 Is Much Faster [Mobile Safari]

The iPhone 2.0 software might be shakier than a true believer's legs in the presence of Steve himself, but there's at least one benefit (besides the app goodness): Mobile Safari 2.0 is much zoomier....

iPhone Native Apps vs. iPhone Web Apps

John Allsop wrote a long piece over at Web Directions South with some thoughts on writing native iPhone apps versus web-based iPhone apps. The obvious flaw in his piece is that he only looked at free iPhone applications and from that subset concluded that almost everything the native apps do could be done with web applications [...]

Those damned capitalists!

They’re accusing Apple of concocting the whole thing as some sort of profit-making scheme. That's John Gruber on the Free Software Foundation on the iPhone. Me, I just hope that TIAA-CREF owns a LOT of stock....

Norm Enforcement is Hard, but People do it Anyway

Via John Gruber, here is Lance Arthur standing in line for three hours for a new iPhone. He gets inside the door of the Apple Store and finds someone has skipped into the queue right behind him. So, the interminable line outside comes at last to an end, the Apple Security guard walks over and counts [...]

RSS feeds for the App Store

Filed under: App Store John Gruber's heartfelt plea for iPhone App Store RSS feeds has now been answered. Hands up if you, like John and me and probably a TUAWload of others, were frustrated at the lack of an obvious, easy-to-subscribe-to RSS feed of the latest additions to the App Store. The only solution was to view the complete list of iPhone apps and choose "Sort by: Release date". Not good enough....
