Life with the saints

In today's General Audience address, Pope Benedict extols the virtues of spending time with the saints this summer and gives a preview of the calendar for the remainder of the week: Tomorrow we will remember St. Pius X, who lived in a tormented historical period. Of him John Paul II said, when he visited his birthplace in 1985: "He fought and suffered for the freedom of the Church and for this freedom...

New CD...

I learned to pray the Rosary in Latin by praying it in my car to the accompaniment of Pope John Paul II's Rosary CD. I am delighted to see that Pope Benedict has released a new version (presumably including the luminous mysteries as there are 4 CDs in the collection) so I will be able to recite the Rosary in Latin with a German accent, as well as in Latin with a Polish accent!! Mantilla-twitch to Fr....

Reading at Pluscarden

I would like to share with you some of what I have read and heard read while on retreat at that most beautiful of Abbeys. In the refectory two books were being read, at lunch we heard from the autobiography of Nelson Mandela and at supper we heard from George Weigel's biography of Pope John Paul II. On Sundays the monks here extracts from the Catholic press. Last Sunday Fr Prior chose a column from...

Twin Towers Collapse?

Here's more grim news about the world economy. I wish I could remember where Pope John Paul II said this, but he said there were two atheistic, materialistic world systems: communism and unrestrained capitalism. Both, he predicted, would collapse. It's almost as if the twin towers were a metaphor of the two global materialistic power systems. JP2 lived to see the collapse of communism. Are we now seeing...

JPII Smackdown of Old Marini

During the reign of John Paul II, the official Papal liturgist was a certain Mgr. Marini, who was a Suspect of the First Order to anyone who actually read rubrics... At any rate, here's an interesting story . I recall an episode when Old Marini told John Paul the Great that he should be standing and JP2 replied 'The Pope is kneeling'! Heh. That's about as close as a Pope gets to saying "Shut up!" HT:...

Jerome Corsi Is A Twisted Kook: Once Called For Nuking Temple In Jerusalem

CINCINNATI (TDB) -- Jerome Corsi, the literary quack, is known for making statements that are bigoted against Catholics -- he described Pope John Paul II as senile and opined his successor (Pope Benedict) would probably be the last pope ever. And he often compares Muslims to Nazis. Until today, I never knew Corsi suggested using a nuclear weapon to destroy a religious shrine in the Holy Land. Corsi...

Blessed Alexandrina website

Blessed Alexandrina was beatified in 2004 by Pope John Paul. Here is a short introduction from a dedicated Blessed Alexandrina website Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa of Balasar, Portugal (1904 – 1955), one of the great mystics of modern times, was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2004. A ‘victim soul', chosen by Christ to suffer in atonement for the sins of humanity, she was bedridden for life...
