The Times' John Goodbody takes a look at China's great athletic medal hope, Liu Xiang: It has always been destined to be a victory parade, the moment when the Chinese celebrate their staging of the Olympics with the nation's favourite sportsman winning their only gold medal on the track. The Chinese want hurdler Liu Xiang to capture a gold medal in Beijing and make their nation proud. The burden of expectation is heavy — just as it was for Australian runner Catherine Freeman in Sydney in 2000 and Greek sprinter Kostas Kenteris in Athens in 2004. SPIEGEL looks at three would-be Olympic heroes. Go to [...]

There has been a lot of speculation as to who the final torch bearer will be for the Beijing Olympics, the individual who gets to light the cauldron in the Bird's Nest on 8/8. The IOC has a rule that an individual can only be a torchbearer once during each relay, so therefore Liu Xiang, who many suspected it would be, was ruled out, since he was the first torch bearer when the relay was started in...

Here is a top eight list of storylines as selected by Alan Abrahamson at NBC. No. 1: Michael Phelps chases history No argument from me with this choice. People love seeing records broken and heroes made. If Michael Phelps can win eight Olympic golds he is certainly going to go down in history as one of the greatest Olympians. Phelps'?? first final is a 400-meter individual medley at 10 a.m., Sunday...

China’s best hope for a medal in the track and field at the Beijing Olympics Liu Xiang, had his world record beaten by Dayron Robles of Cuba. Robles took off just 0.01 seconds of Xiang’s record winning the 110 meter hurdles in 12.87 seconds. “It is such a good time; I did not expect that. Wow!” Robles said. “Thanks, Ostrava! I am very happy and satisfied. I do not know if I can beat Liu Xiang in Beijing...

Day –1 Your daily Olympic wrap-up. Notable Canadian performance: The Air Canada official that actually used some common sense to resolve a misunderstanding. Don’t get me started on Air Canada. One day when things are real slow around here I’ll tell you the story of the day that I had to pick up my cats at the Calgary airport. I was nearly arrested. And, what? We didn’t compete yesterday so

The real ???thugs and goons'?? out there are the IOC. They are an organization so driven by greed, money and corruption that all other considerations come second. They have been bribed easily and they sell out quickly on any issue regarding rights or dignity. Yet as much as I despise the IOC, an organization that seems completely unaware that the stars of the Olympics are people like Michael Phelps,...

We have had a sneak preview of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, but one question, still remains, who will light the Olympic cauldron? The cauldron has not always been lit at the stadium, at the Winter Games in 1952 and 1960, the flame was lit in the hearth of the home of a Norwegian skiing pioneer, Sondre Norheim, in Morgedal. Muhammad Ali at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and Australian Aboriginal...

In fact, NBC’s decision to delay the online video coverage of popular events for [...]
