NEW YORK (Reuters) - Gannett Co Inc , the largest U.S. newspaper publisher, reported a lower quarterly profit on Monday and revenue fell because of a 28 percent drop in publishing advertising sales.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Gannett Co Inc , the largest U.S. newspaper publisher, reported a 56-percent drop in quarterly profit on Wednesday because of a plunge in advertising revenue, but shares soared in pre-market trading because the profit beat Wall Street estimates.

Gannett's freefall continued Wednesday as the company's stock dropped 21 cents to $4.75 per share. It was the fourth day in a row of sizable losses. Gannett stock was trading at $6.90 per share last week when the negative streak began. Gannett is the parent company of the Springfield News-Leader .
