“Dear Prime Minister… er…”

Labour’s 26th-safest seat, Glasgow East, has gone west . Now what? We are writing this private letter as a group of MPs first elected in 2001, all of whom have been involved in the party and the wider Labour movement for a long time. … We have always believed passionately in the same kind of modern, progressive, electable Labour Party that you do. The permanent advancement of this kind of dynamic,...

What is the NPF?

This weekend the Labour Party is at its National Policy Forum (NPF) at Warwick University. The NPF has for fifteen years been the focus of policy ideas in the Labour Party, as a deliberative and democratic way of forming policy....

"SNP stuns Labour in Glasgow East"

"An earthquake..."

A recount of the votes in the Glasgow East by-election has been required , apparently. The result of the Glasgow East Westminster by-election has been delayed after a re-count was ordered, following a request from Labour. It is believed the initial count gave the SNP a lead of less than 500. Labour had a majority of 13,507 in Glasgow East over the SNP in the seat in the 2005 general election. Voter...

Will they, won't they?

Will there be a UK General Election off the back of the Glasgow East "earthquake"? No. Next question? If Gordon Brown felt unable to go to the country last autumn, he will scarcely be more encouraged as a consequence of defeat in Labour's hitherto third safest seat in Scotland. It is, however, entertaining to ponder the prospect, posed by David Cameron, the Tory leader. It is amusing, further, to...

Do you feel lucky?

The polls have closed. The count is underway . First and best info, of course, here on the BBC. First, a little background. Labour comes to this Scottish Westminster by-election - on the back of two catastrophic defeats in England. They lost Crewe and Nantwich - with a 17% swing to the Tories. And they came an embarrassing fifth in Henley . But this is Glasgow East . Where they normally weigh the...

The devolution train wreck

I’m so happy. In many ways this is an example of New Labour being devoured by the monster that they created. The SNP have been in government long enough in Scotland to indicate that they are at the very least as capable as the usual bunch at governing. It all puts me in mind of [...]

Glasgow East: Not Getting The Message

Wow . Labour actually managed to lose one of their safest seats in the country. Which is nice. I'm no supporter of the SNP , but it is nice to see this godawful party further slip towards well-deserved electoral oblivion. They'll be lots of comment about this defeat; Labour are going to have to work hard to spin this as anything other than a total fucking disaster. That isn't going to stop them from...

To oblivion or half-way there.

The response by Gordon Brown and the top of New Labour to the catastrophic by-election result in Glasgow East would be comical if it wasn't so deeply sad. It truly is a purest example of the clichéd deer in the headlights - a party that simply has no idea what to do except to keep on doing what it's currently doing. Witness Brown yet again inform us all of how he feels our pain. Witness Des Browne...

In this (bbc) Bananas in the Falklands and the other zoo residents would like to welcome John Mason, the new SNP member of parliament which is part of this debate (my blog). Labour loses ultra-safe seat

A 22.5% swing away from Labour ! While it's a Scottish seat, and the winning party was the SNP, this is another big blow to New Labour and Gordon Brown. Glasgow East was one of the safest Labour seats in the country: a hellhole of crumbling council blocks, unemployment and crime. But the whole basis of Scottish politics is hating the English, and the Scottish Nationalists took full advantage of it....

Sore political heads

It's morning after a terrible Glaswegian night before for the Labour Party . Gordon Brown will not be the only one who woke today with a very sore political head. The voters of Glasgow East have ensured that nowhere can now be called a safe Labour seat. Overnight, a Labour majority of over 13,500 in Labour's formerly third safest seat in Scotland, and its 25th safest seat in the UK, simply vanished....

What a statement has been made in Glasgow.

Well of course we were all hoping for labour to get their ass kicked in Glasgow but I actually didn't think it would happen. Read here . I'm going to have another party. Now this must be a blow that even someone as thick as Gordo can feel. His merry men must be running around now, less merry, making plans for the future. Sadly, those plans won't translate to an election for us but fingers crossed,...
