Friday Night at the Cinema

We watched All About Eve, a 1950 movie with Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, and Hugh Marlowe. Brown Bear Daughter said it was “the creepiest movie ever, except for Signs and The Village.” Anne Baxter plays what we nowadays would call a stalker; she idolizes actress Margo Channing (Bette Davis). Ms. [...]

The Busy Body

Skip It Legend Films, partnering up with Paramount this time to dredge their vaults of questionable library titles, has released producer/director William Castle's woeful 1967 mob/macabre comedy, The Busy Body , starring Sid Caesar, Robert Ryan, Anne Baxter, and a host of comedic supporting players. If you grew up in the early seventies, you may remember The Busy Body as one of those marginal-to-dreadful...

Blue Turns to Gray

Last night I was enjoying William A. Wellman's terrific western, Yellow Sky (1948) when I noticed a strange looking shot near the end of the picture. I wonder if any film experts out there can help me figure out how it was photographed. Yellow Sky is based on an unpublished...

That Jezebel… Bette Davis retrospective

Earlier this year, just a day after Julie Burchill wrote out portrayals of strong women in film, I watched All About Eve for the very first time. It’s an masterpiece starring Bette Davis as Margo Channing, a talented, aging actress who knows she’s past her prime. She takes a starstruck fan (Eve - played by [...]

Grudge Match: Eve Harrington vs. Veda Pierce

Maybe somebody's done something like this already, but: a fight between two evil young women from Oscar-winning movies who are out to destroy and supplant the middle-aged divas who love them: Eve Harrington ( Anne Baxter ) from All About Eve vs. Veda Pierce ( Ann Blyth ) from Mildred Pierce . Who wins this battle of the anti-ingénues? Advantages for Eve: She's smarter than Veda, better able to manipulate...

7 May Fortune Teller says

Your birthday today: You are a slow and plodding worker. You are shrewd, clear-sighted and your judgment is very good. You have much self-esteem, ambition and ability. You are capable of a strong and devoted love and will have a pleasant home life. You have a quiet day ahead of you, since there is nobody in the book with whom to share the party plans. Maybe you could continue to keep your self-esteem...

18th Century Lasagne

'It's best to have failure happen early in life. It wakes up the Phoenix bird in you so you rise from the ashes.' [Anne Baxter, Actress] R ISING THE morning following ‘The Phoenix’ was staggeringly difficult. Despite implementing a mandatory tie policy to try to instil decorum into Will Gau's ‘Gaustronaughts’ dining club, the sheer volume of our tasting line-up shunned modesty. It is hard to find the...

Kindersymphonies Project - Frank Lloyd Wright

A group of four kindergartens designed in 1926 for the Chicago suburb of Oak Park. Wright archivist Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer reckons "no project more evidently portrays Wright's love of delighting small children than this one for a group of four playhouses in Oak Park, Illinois. Even the title suggests the romance of the scheme, 'Kindersymphonies.' The names he selected for the playhouses further suggest...

I keep watching good movies!

I'm happy to report that I'm getting back in the habit of watching good movies again. After too long of satisfying myself with whatever dreck Showtime or Comedy Central offer up (hmm, should I watch Employee of the Month for the third time, or Tommy Boy for the tenth?), I'm making myself TiVo (and watch! That's always the hard part) some of the great films constantly being aired on Turner Classic Movies....

R.I.P. Charlton Heston

With the , it seems an appropriate time to bring up his best movies. Whether you agree with his politics or not, Heston's movies were unforgettable. The top five, in the order they were released:1. (1956): I don't know if it still does, but this movie used to air every year around Easter. And I remember watching it every year as a kid. And it never got old.Incredibly, Cecil B. DeMille made a silent...

The only movie I've ever bought from the iTunes store was the Ten Commandments. It's always good for endless hours of amusement. It's three hours of bombast that never fails. Best line in the movie, repeated so many times, is the breathy. "Oh Moses" from Anne Baxter. It's wonderful. And the cast, come on. One of the all time greats.

Charlton Heston

Nooo. I didn't care for his views on the subject of guns, and he wasn't "my president" (neither is that clown who has the job now), but he will always be unforgettable for his performances in Ben-Hur, The Omega Man, Soylent Green, The Ten Commandments, and, of course, Planet of the Apes and many others. So here's to "Soylent Green is peeeeeeople!!!", "damned, dirty ape" and (::: Anne Baxter voice :::)...
