The humidity levels aren't as severe these past few days but heavy precipitation gets me down. I particularly hate precipitation mixed with strong winds or continuous rain showers as the asphalt on the roads here become swept away and driving...

DCist's highly subjective and hardly comprehensive guide to the most interesting movies playing around town in the coming week. Betty Blue Jean-Jacques Beineix managed to define an entire aesthetic of French cinema in the 1980s ("Cinéma du look," which featured highly stylized visuals and stylishly disaffected youth) through just two films, 1981's Diva , and 1986's Betty Blue . The...

Martyrs ( France – 2009 ) Dir: Pascal Laugier Starring: Morjana Alaoui, Mylene Jampanoi A young woman is subject to depraved torture in an effect to learn of the afterlife in this grisly, confrontational horror film. A true assault on the senses this film’s sadistic nature makes it a tough watch for even the most seasoned horror fans. Still, it makes some interesting observations about...

Early in Betty Blue , aspiring novelist Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade) declares, "She was like a flower with translucent antennae and a mauve plastic heart" in so solemn a tone that it practically dares the viewer to laugh. And so it goes throughout this divisively fleshy 1986 opus. Bett...

Indoors on my own and off work, I watched a lot of French horror last Friday. Well, three films to be precise, and I now have renewed respect for the French and their bravery in making truly messed up, intense movies. I am still mulling over Martyrs . I know I enjoyed it but I can't quite form coherent sentences as to why. It's had a funny impact on me really. I would love to study it on a film course...

ONE of the more bracing moments of my adolescence involved going to the movies with a female friend, also in her late teens, to see the French film Betty Blue. It opens with an explosive 10-minute sex scene that is arousing enough to fire up an entire retirement village, let alone an 18-year-old lad who is already as toey as a Roman sandal.
