A slop bucket of misconceived tricks, rigor-mortis mood, and laughable intentions, Jon Avnet's 88 Minutes certainly isn't the first bad movie that the still-feral Al Pacino has top-lined but, for one reason or another, it feels like the first time that the actor hasn't tried to save himself from the sinking ship. In the vein of , another vacuous thriller too hard-nosed to play it loose or be creative,...

From its murderous opening scene - a smarmy, voyeuristic nighttime attack on twin sisters in their apartment, in their underwear - to the preposterous, bodies-dangling-on-ropes-and-pulleys climax, 88 Minutes proves itself to be a maddeningly mediocre, ineptly manipulative "real-time" thriller. (A real-time thriller that's almost 20 minutes longer than its title suggests.)

Bad news: Al Pacino's "88 Minutes" loiters around for 19 minutes longer than the title suggests. Worse, it feels like 188 minutes.
