Returning to writing happens in its own time; I've known that for more than the three years of blogging time I've had, but it still surprises me. I can't really say what was holding me up - the 8... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
Some of you may have noticed that any articles that have slipped off the front page now have moderated comments. I was forced to do this by huge waves of spam hitting my blog -- it's getting worse all the time actually, dozens of spam comments to be weeded out every day. But I'm delighted that people still comment on older articles. Two recent comments I wanted to draw attention to: anonymous (sign...
In further tales of limited connectivity, I am in St Pancras. The wafflechild has just left me with many imprecations not to lose any more vital things or get lost and only just stopping short of writing my name and his phone number on my forehead in magic marker. He's not wrong. I have been horribly, pathetically chaotic in the last couple of days. Useless. I suppose the enforced competence of moving...
I'm really new to the wonderful on-screen pairing of Doris Day and Rock Hudson, but am glad I've finally learnt about their movies. Pillow Talk was their first movie together, and it's absolutely a joy to watch. Besides the witty dialogue, I just adore Doris Day's looks in this movie. I wish people still dressed like this today - how lovely to wear gloves, hats, fur muffs(!) and to dress up for dinner....
This song won me over in about 3 seconds with its springy guitar, and though some might find Olof Arnalds' oohing a little too bold, a little too Doris Day, I find it all the more idyllic. This is the musical equivalent of Snow White's friendly forest animals. I don't know what she's saying, but it sounds warm and earnest, like she has my best interests in mind. Ólöf Arnalds Englar og dárar...
"Snood" sounds like a Dr. Seuss creature, doesn't it? The snood has been around for quite a while—remember those hairnet type things in the 40s? They were the quintessential woman's look of the era, and when I see a photo of one or someone wearing one in a movie, that era is evoked perfectly. Today's snood is something altogether different—no hairnet involved!—it's really...
Okay, you can breathe a sigh of relief now. Here are the final three songs. I could post plenty more (Day recorded hundreds of songs) but enough's enough. Secret Love Calamity Jane Somewhere Over The Rainbow Sentimental Journey
A week ago I received an email on this alerting me to a screening that occurred last night, but I missed it, and didn’t post the info here. Sorry! My mailbox is inundated with stuff daily, and it some times takes me awhile to get through much of it. Just going through my email can be [...]
Well since I think I am supremely well qualified in the ways and wherefores of brushing a bog now (I aint big headed or anything but I'm starting to class myself as an expert), I thought I would pass on my tips to you all. What a generous guy I am huh? Here then is Pompeys guide to cleaning a bathroom. Step one. Have a cigarette. Of course this does slighty less than fuck all for the cleanliness of...
Thanksgiving is a week away ... hard to believe it's almost here already ... and we're preparing for my Texas sister and her family to join us. The Middle Sister is coming home to Virginia and we'll all gather as we do each year, cooking and playing board games and being thankful that we could all be together for another year. My parents, sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces, and my husband and children...
This evening we went to the George & Dragon in Thames Ditton to see the John Barnes quartet, but John was absent so the musicians were Terry Ede (tenor sax, Soprano sax, clarinet and flute, pictured), Alan Berry (keyboard, pictured), Mick Durelle (string bass) and Don Cook (drums). Jim Trimmer (vocals, pictured) joined the band for two numbers. The numbers we enjoyed most were: 1) Recado , about...
It's not Black Friday yet, but for many people, the Christmas shopping has begun. Retired Marine Col. Ken Crowell asks everyone to remember those children who might not have anyone shopping for them...
