Like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Monroe and Eva Gabor, Senator Jesse Helms has died on the Fourth of July . I have to say that I was shocked and saddened to learn that he hadn't died years ago. From Wikipedia : Hendrik Hertzberg of The New Yorker noted in his memoirs that Helms had "the 'humorous habit'" of calling all black people "Fred". A MeFi commenter compares this to the demeaning practice...

Green acres is the place for me. Farm livin’ is the life for me. Land spreadin’ out so far and wide Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside. New York is where I’d rather stay. I get allergic smelling hay. I just adore a penthouse view. Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue. I’m afraid this one isn't about the TV [...]

If you're in or near the Bay area (and I'm not saying you shouldn't be), the University of California at Berkeley is holding A week-long Frank Tashlin retrospective. Your birthday today: Your laziness, indifference, and a positive and sometimes cynical manner, are drawbacks which you should try desperately to overcome. You have latent talents that could be developed to your advantage. You can be passionate and excitable, but usually are self-possessed and calm. In love you are not indifferent. In the book you are not accompanied. You will have to find other birthday...
