The Story: How do you get "out" of a sketch? You could link sketches, throw interstitials, bumpers, segues...really, anything that could provide a transition from one to the other. On "Monty Python's Flying Circus" this was always a problem. The shows were such a grab-bag of material that transitioning from one to another was always messy, even with the always-at-the-ready "And...
For most of you, you may be tempted to avoid purchasing the DVD - in fact, you may wish to acquire the hour-long version of this documentary via dubiously legal means. Trust me, the hour-long version is a little truncated, and the six hour version of Monty Python: Almost The Truth is nothing more than a revelation. Covering pretty much the entirety of Python history (including the 70s record albums,...
Notice that he doesn't mention the quite gay Graham Chapman, whose lunacy was the thing that lifted Python above the Goons/Spike Milligan-esque stuff they were doing.
Today's Ypulse Youth Advisory Board post is from Nina Lepp about the bond she formed with her dad over British comedy troupe Monty Python. As always, you can communicate directly with any member of the Ypulse Youth Advisory Board by emailing them at youthadvisoryboard at ypulse.com…or just leave a comment below. On October 4, 1989, founding Monty Python member Graham Chapman, star of both Holy Grail and Life of Brian, died from cancer. At his memorial service, the remaining Pythons eulogized Chapman in truly appropriate style — by cursing, joking around, but in the end, expressing love for their lost peer. In this clip, watch John [...]
The Story: It's all funny, really...even the skewed credits in Nørsk. But my favorite part of " Monty Python and the Holy Grail " comes deep in that very episodic and brutally low budget film (partially financed by the bands Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd ) with a three episode strip that exemplifies what is best in the comedy troupe's methods of madness; we'll be exploring these over...
Here's something I was discussing at work earlier and which might prove useful: how to link to a YouTube clip at a specific starting time. Basically you take the URL for the clip and append #t=XmYs to the end of it, substituting the appropriate numbers of minutes and seconds for X and Y as appropriate. So I can now take you straight to the Michael Portillo "erect" moment , which is handy....
The last few books I've read have all been biographical... John PeelKeith Moon Kirsty MacColl Gram Parsons Graham Chapman I really need to stop reading about dead people !
"The unusual suspects, 1969: top row from left, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam; bottom row from left, Terry Jones, John Cleese and Michael Palin." Source of caption and photo: online version of the NYT article quoted and...
It was 1969, the year Jimi Hendrix played 'The Star Spangled Banner' at Max Yasgur's farm, the year the Beatles broke up, the year man landed on the freakin' moon.
Last week’s six-part Monty Python Reunion show, featured on the Independent Film Channel, has created a resurgent wave to find the Holy Grail among a new generation of Christian evangelicals in America. Although these born-agains had not even heard of the artsy IFC, and wouldn’t have watched it anyway, they claim that the Python reunion series appeared [...]
When you say no to a project is almost as important as how you say no. If I want a healthy relationship with the person pitching to me, I always listen to her entire pitch. I don’t cut her off mid pitch even if I know the project isn’t for me. (That smacks of arrogance) If the request/project is big/important to her, I’ll, at least, think about [...]
