There was a fairly meager turnout when actor Peter Graves got his star unveiled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame late this morning. Which is sad because the brother of Gunsmoke star James Arness was once a huge presence on TV in the late '60s, starring as Jim Phelps on Mission: Impossible . Not to mention his roles in the movies Stalag 17 , Night of the Hunter , and both Airplane! s. Still, it was not...

Tonight I caught up with a new-to-me John Wayne movie, BIG JIM McLAIN. Wayne plays the title character, a HUAC investigator hunting Communists in Hawaii along with James Arness. In his free time, Jim romances a lovely widow (Nancy Olson) and tours some of the islands' beautiful sights. The movie -- which struck me as something of a precursor to HAWAII FIVE-O -- is a fascinating snapshot of its era...

We all know about Paul Revere's famous ride. Did you know his horse's name - Brown Betty. Now you do. Did you know that the horse ridden by James Arness (Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke) was the same one ridden by Lorne Greene (Ben Cartwright on Bonanza)? Its name was Buck on both series, but its real name was Dunny Waggoner and Greene bought the horse after his series ended. Ulysses S. Grant's horse

Been a while since we’ve done a Top 5, so I figured it was time. As the title of this post suggests, this is TV cowboys only, so don’t go dropping no Tex Ritter or Clint Eastwood on me, unless you want to go Rowdy Yates (which would be a waste of a spot in [...]

Some of the most well-known men from acting, music, politics and business walked the hollowed halls of campus fraternity houses. For some college men, it’s an ideal setting to be groomed and prepare for life on the other side of school, to create a network of contacts, create lifelong friendships, and find opportunities for career. Here [...]

We finished our vacation with a sunset sail on a catamaran sailing from Anaehoomalu Bay. We had a perfect sunset , just enough clouds to make it interesting, but a clear horizon line for the sun to sink through. The boat, the Sea Smoke, was formerly a speed-sailing catamaran owned by James Arness of the TV show Gunsmoke. It has been reconfigured for whale-watching, snorkel cruises, and sunset cruises....

CBS has tapped Gregory Poirier (”National Treasure: Book of Secrets”) to write the script. The action-adventure will re-imagine Marshal Matt Dillon, the [...]
