LOS ANGELES — Jim Carrey's Scrooge collected holiday donations from movie fans with his new take on "A Christmas Carol," which took in $31 million to open as the weekend's top movie. The Disney animated version of the Charles Dickens classic knocked the King of Pop out of the No. 1 spot as "Michael Jackson's This Is It" slipped to second place with $14 million, according to...

Something caught my eye in Saturday's Inquirer. Dave Hiltbrand's review of "the Box," ("Press button, make movie die"), ends with this sentence: [Cameron] Diaz and [james] Marsden don't make a very convincing couple, either. Though they're roughly the same age, his boyish face makes him look like he could be her little brother. If they didn't have good on screen chemistry, that's...

By Simon Abrams SPOILER WARNING IN EFFECT Regardless of how you feel about the film itself, the sticking point for The Box —mad scientist Richard Kelly’s latest oddity—is how well it succeeds as Kelly’s version of a mainstream, commercially viable bit of speculative fiction. Southland Tales , Kelly’s unjustly maligned sophomore experiment, was both viciously maligned by...

The Box starts with a concept that appeals to most people's love for mystery: an anonymous gift left on a suburban doorstep belonging to the Lewis family. Wrapped all in brown paper, it arrives just before the moment private school teacher Norma Lewis (Cameron Diaz) discovers her son's tuition will no longer be a discounted perk. That same morning, husband Arthur (James Marsden) is floored by the news...

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." --Arthur C. Clarke 1) I found Richard Kelly's The Box annoying in a direct ratio to my admiration of his Donnie Darko (2001). The former cult film combines apocalyptic vision, the delusions of insanity, and a loose story structure that invited multiple interpretations, and yet the film works. It left me wondering--why...

The beautiful Cameron Diaz and equally beautiful (that facial bone structure!!) James Marsden premiered ‘ The Box ‘ in New York last night along with Sam Oz, Richard Kelly, and John Magaro . The tagline for this horror/thriller (which I will NOT be seeing by the way) is: You Are The Experience I pee’d a little when I read that it frightened me so much. The plot: A small wooden box arrives on the doorstep
