Monkey miaMichael CollinsOK, hands up if you are man enough to admit liking Abba. I don’t know if I am man enough to do so. Maybe appreciate the song writing skills of the Bs of the band, but that’s about it.There was only so much I could handle of that duo of voices. By, so much, I mean about half a song. Then I started to go nuts a bit.I did like Chess, the musical that Anderson and Ulvaeus did post-Abba....

Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters. That's my guess for the leads in the film of Canoe Man and Canoe Wife . Because there will be a film of it, won't there? I look forward to those Seaton Carew location shots- It remains the news sensation of the year anyway.

After I saw Mamma Mia! on stage almost four years ago, people would ask me how it was, and my answer was pretty simple: If you love silly musicals and ABBA, you’ll love it. If you don’t love one or both of those things, you’ll want to rip your own ears off. This is the [...]

Last night we went to see ‘Mamma Mia!’ at the cinema. Now, I like Abba as much as the next ’secure-in-my-masculinity child-of-the-seventies-and-early-eighties’ - but I had seen the trailer… and Meryl Streep wearing Dungarees and prancing about didn’t fill me with confidence. ‘Chick Flick’, thought I. It was, however, good. To my surprise. Yes, it was contrived, [...]

What do the two presumptive top movies of this weekend have in common? Both The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia! feature one star each from the 1983 art-house hit Educating Rita . In her first film role, Julie Walters plays a hairdresser that takes a lit class from an embittered failed poet played by ubiquitous thespian Michael Caine. They were both nominated for Best Acting Oscars, but neither took home...

Back in November 2006, at Manchester airport and about to head off to Australia, I wrote about the stage production of Mamma Mia! - 'absolutely terrific', I said; 'a great tongue-in-cheek extravaganza'. Naturally, I was going to go and see...

I forgot to say: watch out for Colin Firth reprising his Darcy in wet shirt role. Don't blink or you'll miss it. It was a very girlie audience. Apart from husband, the few men who were there all looked ... slightly less than macho ... But Husband thoroughly enjoyed the film too. Julie Walters is a scream, as you would expect, but Meryl Streep is very funny too. Lindsay asked about the singing. I think...
