Bawdy farce involving Tom Jones's penis becomes a multiplex sensation The Hollywood blockbusters 2012 and A Christmas Carol are playing to respectable audiences Merthyr Tydfil's Vue multiplex, entertaining fans with their multimillion pound effects. But in screen eight, the staff are having to drag in extra beanbags in an attempt to accommodate everyone who wants to see a comedy made for just £100,000...

Anyone For a Film? (Free subscription) | yesterday
As the beleaguered British warhorse trundles on, two cinematic splinter movements (speaking broadly) have emerged as its mirror. One is the floppy-haired, fairytale world of Richard Curtis and co. The other draws more from the British layman on the streets: a grey, grimy, melancholy land of confused identity and pervasive violence (think Ken Loach or, more recently, Shane Meadows). There’s no...

Where are the Boys in Blue when you need em ? Looking for something other than mediocre talent contests or re-runs of “Mock the Weak” to watch on a Saturday night we found on I player the French film "36". It’s a cop film (possibly a un flic flick?) with Gérard Depardieu and Daniel Auteuil in it. It’s a classic good cop vs. bad cop drama (well goodish cop vs....

Harry Brown - Michael Caine's latest blockbuster - is receiving, in the main, rave reviews. If you didn't know, it's a sort of British Death Wish movie with Caine playing an elderly vigilante who tackles a violent gang in London. People falling over themselves to heap praise on the film gush about it tackling 'difficult issues' etc etc. Problem: any figures you care to look at will tell you that the...

Everything about this film is absolutely amazing. The acting in this film particularly stands out and I'm not just talking about Michael Caine, who is excellent as always, I'm talking about the rest of the cast. The performances where BAFTA worthy. I particularly was impressed with Jack O'Connell (who you might better know for playing Cook in Skins ). The way the film is shot is just beautiful. The...

Clearly this is the low point of the Blazers' season so far. Losing to Golden State in Oakland isn't the end of the world. If it were the world would have ended multiple times before now. But losing to Golden State when they have a depleted roster, field no live bodies above 6'6", are guarding you with the same two backcourt players all game, and when you jumped of the gate with 37 in the first...

2012: Box Office Armageddon In the US : Roland Emmerich's fetishist disaster movie 2012 explodes into the chart at #1 with an impressive $65m (that's $19,000 at every cinema it was screening at), so looks on course to earn back its $200m budget... and festival darling PRECIOUS debuts at #3, and will likely drift downwards... also, PIRATE RADIO (aka The Boat That Rocked) proved to be a hopeless flop...

The second scariest teacher at our high school was called Harry Brown. He could silence a room of misbehaving scrotes just by walking down the hall. He once gave me the bollocking of a lifetime for knocking on the church door and not running away as fast as my mates. I couldn't sleep for a week, worried the police were going to come knocking and drag me away to borstal for my crime. You didn't fuck...

Rent It THE FILM With two direct and developed lead performances from Michael Caine and young Bill Milner, it seems unfair to watch their efforts wasted on an uneven, unsatisfying picture like the tear-jerker "Is Anybody There?" It's a simple case of acting trumping splintered storytelling, with most, if not all scraps of character vulnerability and empathy emerging from the measured talents...
