From the fantastical set of Fringe in Vancouver, I got to play the role of Observer (without undergoing a buzz cut, thankfully) and find out from the cast what’s coming up on this show in which “the impossibilities are endless.” Here’s a whiff of what was uncovered during my visit. A prevailing topic on the set was that The Observers are about to get a whole lot more face time....
I’m pretty sure Ed Wood would have loved Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant. Messy, flawed, riddled with odd choices and questionable casting, and stuck with a plot that make less, not more, sense as it progresses, The Vampire’s Assistant is in every way a B-movie. And, I’ll admit, I kinda liked it. Based on a [...]
In the bizarre world of "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant," there's a war brewing over, how to put this simply, "portion" control. It seems the truce between those who sip, leaving humans a little weaker but none the wiser, and those who guzzle, gluttons who leave death, destruction and no tip behind, has been on hold for a couple hundred years.
"Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" is sort of a "Twilight"-lite. It's about vampires and it's about teenagers. But the movie's big drawback is that it isn't silly enough.
There's plenty to like about Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant: A winning script by director Paul Weitz and Oscar owner Brian Helgeland; a fascinating cast that includes John C. Reilly, Ray Stevenson, Salma Hayek, and Ken Watanabe; and special effects that, while limited, effectively establish the otherworldly quality of the material. So why did Universal, still looking for its own to profit...

Blending a sardonic sense of humor with a healthy dose of things that go bump in the night, the film is a mostly entertaining horror-comedy that introduces us to a world which, with any luck, we’ll get to know better over the course of a few more movies.
John C. Reilly is well cast as a playful, seen-it-all blood-sucker in Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant John C. Reilly is well cast as a playful, seen-it-all blood-sucker in Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant
The Observer has been one of Fringe 's most compelling enigmas since he started appearing week to week in hidden, or sometimes obvious, cameos in the hit Fox sci-fi series. Michael Cerveris plays the mysterious bald man in a suit who likes spicy food. Now that he's a regular fixture on Fringe , there's going to be a whole episode that delves into his world. We spoke to Cerveris exclusively by phone...
I know firsthand how music can be the connective tissue in a community, and how here in New Orleans, it is a positive force for young people at an impressionable (and risky) point in their lives.
