Gemma Arterton gets a breath of fresh air in between shooting scenes in her first major starring role. Gemma, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, plays a woman who transforms her looks – and her life – as she searches for that most desired thing: love. The fast-rising actress plays the eponymous Tamara [...]
Charles Moore from The Telegraph delighted in marking the mistakes in Emma 2009 in his article, This misdjudged Emma is a pendant's dream . His observations include: Why, for instance, on a single day of the story, were we offered the horticultural miracle of daffodils out, oak in full leaf and mature wistaria flowering (the last did not even acquire its name until two years after the book was published...
The final part of Emma was screened last night, and I still have very mixed feelings about this adaptation. Once again there were too many opportunities missed to use Austen's original dialogue. Jane Fairfax (Laura Pyper) threatened to steal a show - she came across as a much more likeable character than Emma, which wasn't Austen's intention. Jonny Lee Miller's Mr Knightley did a lot to reconcile me...
I was a bit surprised they were stringing out Emma over four episodes. Unlike the rumbustious plot of Pride and Prejudice the story of Emma is so slight. But the adaptation was wonderfully written, and has opened up the book rather than simplifying it as the terrible film version with Gwynnie did, which turned this nasty black comedy into a sunny bonnets and punnets romp. Romola Garai was utterly beguiling...
A quick sidestep into Turn off the TV territory, which is something I rarely do, but I’m enjoying Radio 4’s perennial everyday story of country folk so much at the moment, I had to say a few words. The Archers is on tiptop form right...
Highbury, the large and populous village, almost amounting to a town, to which Hartfield, in spite of its separate lawn, and shrubberies, and name, did really belong, afforded her no equals. The Woodhouses were first in consequence there. All looked up to them. – Emma, Jane Austen, Ch 1 Please take the Emma Poll at the [...]
Jane Austen’s 'Emma' always sets me a problem, albeit a very nice one. I always think ‘Pride & Prejudice’ is my favourite Austen novel until I re-read ‘Emma’ – there are so many good things I discover in it which I have never noticed before. Did BBC1's Emma come up to scratch? I thought the beginning was very dark – my jaw dropped when coffins appeared...
guest post by mikl-em Dylan Moran levels a characteristically petulant critique of California and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wherein the Irish comedian demonstrates his personal aversion for “lifting up heavy things”. You might recognize Moran from the film Shaun Of The Dead. He also starred in a great, lesser-known (in the US) sitcom on Britain’s Channel 4 [...] This is a blog...
Heaving chests and bouncing bonnets abound in the BBC's new adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma Sing hosanna, for the costume drama stork has deposited a bundle of joy on our collective doorstep. Adapted from the Jane Austen novel by Sandy "Jane Eyre" Welch, Emma finds Auntie in uncharacteristically playful mood, her lacy fingers dancing over the book's rusting "social commentary"...
THE nights may be rapidly drawing in, but at least there's the comforting prospect of a new Jane Austen serial to see us through the bleak Sunday evenings.
UK bonnet drama viewers are in for a treat this week as the new BBC One miniseries of Jane Austen’s novel Emma premieres in the UK on Sunday, October 4th from 9–10:00 p.m. GMT. This is the first of four episodes of the adaptation by BAFTA award winning writer Sandy Welch (Our Mutual Friend, Jane [...]
