The Big Picture: Toronto film fest, a Cannes colony?

"Un Conte de Noel" (directed by Arnaud Desplechin): This was one of my favorite films at the festival. It's about a family gathering that happens over Christmas and is full of intense, crazy characters who always do unexpected things. Catherine Deneuve plays the mother and Mathieu Amalric (the star of "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly") is the most troublesome son. I thought the film was terrific....

Toronto film festival follows Cannes’ lead

The Toronto International Film Festival made way for some Cannes heavyweights Thursday, unveiling Special Presentation slots for Laurent Cantet's Palme d'Or winner "The Class" and Matteo Garrone's Grand Prix winner "Gomorrah" among a group of about two dozen North American premieres. Arnaud Desplechin's "Un conte de Noel" and Canadian helmer Atom Egoyan's "Adoration" -- both Cannes Competition titles...

Palme D'Or 2008

In Cannes last week, critics were already grumbling about the likely result of the deliberations by the Palme D'Or jury, presided over by Sean Penn. He would probably give the top prize to Steven Soderbergh for the dreary Che, those...

Cannes: Acquisitions

The buyer's market at Cannes this year wasn't as bidder heavy as it may have been in previous years, which has been well noted elsewhere. However, IFC Films and Sony Pictures Classics went home with at least three films each; in fact, they were the only studios to make any purchases by the end of the festival on Sunday. IFC took Steve McQueen's Hunger , Arnaud Desplechin's Un conte de Noël and Na Hong-jin's...

AND THEN WE CAME TO THE END

It's been a season with no persuasive candidate, as of this writing, for the Palme d'Or. Three films found favor however, with many critics. One is Waltz with Bashir from Ari Folman, a notably original animated doc about reconstructing the memory of atrocities in Lebanon. What grabbed me about "Waltz" is the unexpected mix of politics and haunting surreal imagery. The Changeling by Clint

CANNES '08 NOTEBOOK | And Then You Die: Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York

by Glenn Kenny (May 23, 2008) In terms of the political/social engagement of competition films at the 61st Cannes Film Festival , it isn't too much of a stretch to say that Charlie Kaufman 's " Synecdoche, New York " makes Arnaud Desplechin 's dysfunctional family drama " A Christmas Tale " look like " Che ," or even " Waltz With Bashir ." Much-bruited, much-imitated screenwriter Kaufman's directorial...
