For Sally Hawkins, 'Happy-Go-Lucky' is not just an act

The actress had to tap into her childlike, optimistic side to play the almost pathologically upbeat Poppy. As Poppy, the fluttering, free-spirited elementary school teacher at the heart of director Mike Leigh's new film, " Happy-Go-Lucky," British actress Sally Hawkins glows like a miniature sun, radiating an infectious sense of joy and a ravenous hunger for life.

Another Delightful Jaunt to Movie-Land

I just love Sheila O'Malley - The Sheila Chronicles . It's a lovely little world she brings to me, a world I have only seen on-screen. And, holding my hand, she toddles off to the backstage, and reveals the unknown story behind the movies. Today, it's Buster Keaton: ...all those silent comedy stars were amazing athletes - they had to be - but Keaton was on another level. He had the fearlessness about...

Happy Birthday Buster

October 4 is Buster Keaton's 113th birthday. I admire many film makers and artists, though for some reason, Buster's birthday sticks in my head and the others don't. I think that John Ford was born in August and I have no idea what month Chaplin was born. Walt Disney, Walt Kelly, Howard Hawks, etc. -- I couldn't tell you what day they were born if my life depended on it. Rather than try to figure out...

COPS

I thought you might be in the mood for a little comedy...actually soem pretty explosive comedy from my favorite American Hero, the great Buster Keaton. This is Cops, a movie from 1921 which he wrote and directed and of course starred in performing physical gags beyond the imagination of mere mortals. It's in three parts and the jazzy sound track doesn't always work, but this is a great movie!

The agreement to help defray the cost of the $1-billion switch ends protracted squabbling with theater chains over who would pay for it. Digital cinema took a major leap forward as five Hollywood studios pledged their support -- and their cash -- to a $1-billion plan to convert old-fashioned 35-mm film projectors to more modern technology in thousands of theaters throughout North America.
