I'm kind of glad Prime Minister Stephen Harper isn't going to Beijing for the Summer Olympics gargantuan opening ceremonies, which are likely to make Cecil B. DeMille look like a piker. Since when were national leaders expected to put in a command appearance at another country's Olympics? All of sudden, for some reason, it's considered a snub to China if Steve doesn't show.

Jonathan Rosenbaum has just posted a review of Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments (1956) that he wrote for the Chicago Reader when the film was re-issued way back in 1990. Very interesting stuff. I would quibble with a few of his statements of fact and at least one of his more minor interpretations -- I do think, in fact, that the film inclines us to believe that Joshua and Lilia get together...

Rumer Willis has a new role and it’s surprisingly not as Mr. Potato Head’s love interest. No no, the spawn of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis will take the stage at this year’s Golden Globes as Miss Golden Globe, basically Vanna White without the letter spinning or botox injections. In other Golden Globe news, Steven [...]

Too bad Cecil B. DeMille isn't around to film Gavin Menzies' "1434," a swashbuckling, overly detailed account — including copious speculation — of Chinese influence on the Renaissance.

DB here: I came back from a month in Europe to find a stack of magazines, books, and DVDs waiting. There was Before the Rain, much Cecil B. DeMille, and a mass of Anthony Manns (some discussed on Jonathan Rosenbaum’s blog). How will I ever catch up? I was reconciled to the idea that I’d die [...]

How did one of Europe's most wanted men give the security forces the slip for so long? Because the Serbs didn't need to seize him until now Looking a little like God in a Cecil B DeMille film, Radovan Karadzic was genuinely unrecognisable when he was arrested on a Belgrade bus last Monday evening. Yet even more astonishing was the news that he had been working as a crystal-rubbing therapist promoting...
