Film Reviews: One advantage to a national cinema mostly created under government auspices — at least in Canada’s case — is that preservation is a much higher priority. I attended a fundraiser for the Infinitheatre. It was at the Pavilion Restaurant on Mont Royal, overlooking Beaver Lake. It is a beautiful spot. The guest of honour was world famous film maker Denys Arcand Mr Arcand is considerably to my left in terms of politic, but he was very charming. I told him in my culture being a film maker would have make Indian parents weep. He said that was also the case...

Cinephiles mourned the closure of Dublin's Light House Cinema in 1996. Now the original owners, Maretta Dillon and Neil Connolly, are re-opening in a stunning, custom-built venue in Smithfield. Denys Arcand is nothing if not obsessed with history. So when I heard that he conceived his newest film as part of a "trilogy" with The Decline of the American Empire (1986) and The Barbarian Invasions (2003), I just knew that the title of the new film -- Days of Darkness -- could not be correct. Surely, given that the original French title is L'Âge des ténèbres , a phrase like The Dark Ages would...
