Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

On Trial I had thought RKO Pictures was already defunct, but it's quite telling that a film from its archives got pulled out for a remake, and although I've not seen the original film in the 50s directed by Fritz Lang no less, this remake had that similar promising premise which soon gave way to ridicule. Suffice to say that without the twist element, it's no better than a standard, average courtroom...

40's movies marathon - part 47

Ministry of Fear (1944, USA) - Fritz Lang imitates Hitchcock. It's all there: The regular guy running away across the country, suspected of a crime he didn't commit. The sinister spy ring with tentacles into all the best circles. Also the sense that it would all have been simpler if he'd just come clean with the police from the start. But what would be the fun of that? Watched it all. Cry of the Werewolf...

Roger Corman's output through the years may not be immediately familiar, but he's been a wide conduit for emerging talent and raw creativity. That's why he's finally been given an Oscar "OK, so, November 14th 2009, Roger Corman receives an Oscar. People … what took you so long?" The words of Jonathan Demme in his speech before handing over the statuette to Corman on that fateful evening....

Observations: From the side streets and the alleys: London rediscovered

Old photographs – their particular grain, their uncanny illumination of both a living moment and the death of time – can possess extraordinary traction. I'm studying a photograph in a new book, Lost London, by Philip Davies, and it's hard to look away.

"Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" a mediocre thriller

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) –In theory, digging into the RKO archives for remake possibilities is a fine idea, but this redo of Fritz Lang's 1956 film noir "Beyond A Reasonable Doubt" is no improvement on a potboiler that was no great shakes to begin with. Director-screenwriter Peter Hyams has said that he wanted to redo this legal thriller with younger stars, but the lack of charisma exhibited...
