Perhaps Tom Ford is a control freak, but he'd prefer not to be called one. "I hate that word," Ford admitted to us on the phone this morning from his hotel room in New York. Last night he screened A Single Man at the Lighthouse Screening Room, where pals like Zac Posen and Mike Nichols were visibly moved by Ford's film. "But, in my life, I've often been called a control freak. There...

ALICE’S RESTAURANT (1969, directed by Arthur Penn, 111 minutes, U.S.) BY DAN BUSKIRK FILM CRITIC Curiously, there is a a dearth of songs to sing around the Thanksgiving dinner table, despite being based on ideas of gratitude and family — I blame those uptight Pilgrims. Well, there is Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” the eighteen-minute talking [...]...

A few weeks ago, with zero fanfare, Warner Bros. released a DVD version of Gilda Live, the Mike Nichols-directed concert pic of Gilda Radner’s 1979 one-woman show. The disc — a bare-bones straight-from-video transfer — ended up under the piles of new releases on my desk until yesterday, when I found it, popped it in

Recommended THE MOVIE: During the summer of 1979, during her hiatus from Saturday Night Live , Gilda Radner performed a live Broadway show featuring many of the popular characters she had invented for the subversive late-night comedy series. Produced and directed by SNL -mastermind Lorne Michaels, Gilda Live was a big hit with audiences. The year following, a film document of the comedienne's showcase,...

A couple of weeks ago I reviewed Nick Horny's fantastic Juliet, Naked, which was something of a return to form for the author, after a threesome of mildly disappointing novels (for Hornby, anyway). One of those slight disappointments was How...

New Orleans is a place that's mediated. It's a place that, before anyone arrives, they've read about and heard about - there were not only preconceived notions, but also wholly formed images in one's head. Kiel, my hometown, does not fit in the same category. A non-native might have an inkling of what he or she might find, but the city doesn't register in the public consciousness nationwide. It's a...

Poor thing. Natalie Portman just can’t decide what she wants. Back in 2007, she said this to Reuters as to why she bared all in Hotel Chevalier: “I don’t know why, exactly. Sometimes you make rules for yourself and sometimes those rules are made to be broken. You have to test things out and see what works [...]
