The Set-Up is a small film and a great one precisely because of its sustained sense of scale. Director Robert Wise took a typical B-movie trope –an aging skid row boxer roped into a fixed fight– and a fashioned a gestalt experience that resonates well beyond dime-store pulp. Robert Ryan plays William “Stoker” Thompson a [...]

This December brings us the remake of Robert Wise's classic science fiction film The Day the Earth Stood Still . I am intrigued, I liked parts of the trailer, but I remain wary. A pair of posters have come out, and they actually look pretty good.

While watching “The X-Files: I Want to Believe,” the second big-screen incarnation of the cult classic TV series that launched countless numbers of lame knock-offs, expensive DVD box sets and slash fiction stories involving its heroes in any number of situations that were clearly not fit for the small screen (despite being on Fox), I found myself thinking about another show with a similar background...

Fox is really kicking our ass with posters today! Not only did they debut two fantastic posters for Max Payne and a poster for Jennifer's Body, but they've finished up the evening with two epic posters for The Day the Earth Stood Still. After I saw the two Max Payne posters, I thought that nothing else they could put out could top either of these - I was wrong. We've seen the poster on the left before...

Concept artist Lorin Wood working on “The Day The Earth Stood Still” remake, and posted a concept rendering of Gort from the new film. Remake director Scott Derrickson recently referenced having considered multiple approaches to Gort, including ideas which deviated significantly from the “classic robot” design of Robert Wise’s 1951 film. Such deviation was evident in our early script [...]

The recently released trailer for The Day the Earth Stood Still put to rest rumors that the new version would alter the original's iconic robot, Gort -- but as concept art for the remake makes clear, things could have gone very differently.

Interesting. Not sure what I think about this yet. The original Robert Wise helmed film is an undeniable classic. As I have said in the past, I am not automatically against remakes, but when it is a classic I think it is all right to be a little bit leery. As far as Keanu Reeves casting, I like it. Of course, I am a Keanu fan/apologist. His "style" of acting seems to be right for the role of Gort....

The Day the Earth Still movie trailer is out. Although it looks great and all, I keep remembering the original, which I dearly love. It is hard to out do Robert Wise with Michael Rennie, Patrica Neal and Sam Jaffe. Related PostsJoe Hamm in ‘Stood Still’Jon Hamm, Golden Globe nominee for “Mad Men,” will star with [...]

Although most might have already seen this trailer in front of Hancock, it is just making its online debut today. The first trailer for The Day the Earth Stood Still remake has launched below and it actually looks surprisingly promising. I don't have as big of a problem as most do with Keanu Reeves, but [...]

I’m the sort of STAR TREK fan that has felt that STAR TREK has always been sold short. The one time that STAR TREK was given an A+ Budget was when Robert Wise made STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE on $35 million - 1970’s dollars. No other STAR TREK movie looks anything like it, but nearly all of them took notes. The Enterprise finally had a sense of scale. They had spacesuits – they dealt with a threat...
