Sometime last month, the European Film Academy announced the 48 films included on their selection list for the 2009 Awards. The nominations, which are to be announced sometime in November, will be pulled from these 48, and the official ceremony will be held in Germany on 12 December. Matteo Garrone's Gomorrah [ Gomorra ] was the big winner last year, taking prizes for Best Film, Director, Actor, Screenwriter...

FILMS SEEN YESTERDAY 1.IMBURNAL (2008, Sherad Anthony Sanchez, Philippines, A++++++++++) 2.DOGTOOTH (2009, Yorgos Lanthimos, Greece, A+) This is what I think about DOGTOOTH after I read Filmsick's blog: http://filmsick.exteen.com/20090929/bkiff-2009-diary-part-2 There are some parts of DOGTOOTH (A+) which remind me of Luis Bunuel's films, but I think Bunuel's films arouse the viewers' imagination much...

Toronto – My only TIFF experience this year was on the very last day of the festival, and one of the very last shows. Here are some gripes I have about TIFF. Lineups are bloody long – The whole rush line thing seems a bit silly, people line up for HOURS to see a movie. Why [...] Related posts: TIFF movie review: Micmacs [Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2009] Toronto – The French are not linked...

Toronto – Despite the audience chuckling under their coffee-breath at 10am, this movie is still quite the dysfunctional study and I don’t think anyone walked out of Varsity cinema, stared at the sun, and said to themselves: “well, that was another artsy banality that I rather not have seen”. Kudos to the director for not [...] Related posts: TIFF movie review: Micmacs [Jean-Pierre...

Reporting on an event like TIFF from the comfort of my own home is frustrating. There's the drive to learn as much about all the new films as possible, without learning too much and unavoidably pre-judging the films before actually seeing them. But some reviews just have to be read. I'd been curious about the Greek film Dogtooth since it debuted at Cannes, where it went on to win in the Un Certain...

Yorgos Lanthimos ' psycho-sexual drama Dogtooth turned a whole lot of heads in Cannes, seemingly coming out of nowhere to become one of the most talked about films of the big festival. And now that it's arriving in Toronto, there is finally a full, proper trailer to show off. Here's how TIFF describes it: Delivering on the promise he showed with his 2005 feature Kinetta, Yorgos Lanthimos deals a masterful...

We commented back when psych-thriller Tale 52 - still very sadly lacking a US distributor - was making the rounds that Greece may very well be a country to watch on the international film scene in coming years. And making me look smart this year was director Yorgos Lanthimos who brought his surreal new drama Dogtooth to Cannes as part of the Un Certain Regard program this year and went away as the...
