When he’s not pounding very large men to the ground, ex-fighter Mike Tyson speaks directly to the camera in James Toback’s film “Tyson,” and it's hard not to flinch. More a testimony for the defense than a documentary, it's a sympathetic portrait of a complex man driven by an anger that still bubbles beneath the surface. ~ * ~ In every circumstance in his life, Tyson believes himself to be the innocent...

I (once again) had quite the hoot at this years Cannes! I got to see some really good films (JCVD and THE EXCHANGE were my favorites), got to hook up with old friends, made new ones (I love meeting new people), relished in the awe inspiring scenery, almost got to hook up with one of my idols (Jean Claude Van Damme... hey I saw him twice though, and even watched JCVD with him in the room) and got to...

Not content to let IFC walk off the Croisette as the big buying ballers of Cannes 2008, Sony Pictures Classics set a number of deals in the last days of the fest, including distribution pacts for the Israeli animated doc Waltz With Bashir, Lorna’s Silence by the Dardenne brothers, and James Toback’s Tyson. Meanwhile, the people [...]

The buyer's market at Cannes this year wasn't as bidder heavy as it may have been in previous years, which has been well noted elsewhere. However, IFC Films and Sony Pictures Classics went home with at least three films each; in fact, they were the only studios to make any purchases by the end of the festival on Sunday. IFC took Steve McQueen's Hunger , Arnaud Desplechin's Un conte de Noël and Na Hong-jin's...

For all the talk about how this was a mediocre year at the Cannes Film Festival, I think I personally saw a higher ratio of good to garbage than is my festival norm. Maybe I’m being Pollyanna-ish; maybe I just went in with lower expectations. Regardless: though certainly I saw films too mediocre to merit [...]

Fatih Akin ( The Edge of Heaven ) gave out the awards for the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival last night. The jury also awarded four other prizes, though I have no idea what their importance is: The Jury Prize (which I would imagine...
