During the week of November 30th, Graphic NYC teams with SMITH Magazine for Harvey Pekar Week, taking a look at the former file clerk’s career from American Splendor to The Pekar Project. There’s a series of events, and more information can be found at www.NYCGraphicNovelists.com. “Also this week, Graphic NYC will be enabling commenting, so we [...]
Hey folks! The much-anticipated documentary The Cartoonist: Jeff Smith, Bone and the Changing Face of Comics , is now in stock at The Beguiling. We just got it in so unfortunately I haven't seen it myself yet, but I've heard good things and Jeff Smith himself seems pretty pleased with it. The 76 minute documentary is an extensive profile on Smith including interviews and other footage, and also includes...
When Paul Buhle (whose collaborations with Harvey Pekar are among my comics favorites) mentioned to me that Harvey Kurtzman was a personal hero, I knew I had to read Buhle's book The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: The Mad Genius...

His inspiration came from Moby Dick and Huck Finn and Star Wars -- he wanted to make something really big, something that started simple and then darkened...
This is great. What better way for comic artists to celebrate Harvey Pekar’s birthday? Pekar, whose autobio-comics self is famously drawn by different artists throughout his career, is rendered lovingly by over 90 different cartoonists as part of The Pekar Project. Shown here: two of my faves, Laura Park and Jeffrey Brown. Posted by John Martz on [...]
Yesterday was fellow Ohioan Harvey Pekar’s 70th birthday. As part of a surprise for Harvey, I, along with about 90 other cartoonists, drew Harvey Heads. The portraits were unveiled yesterday on SMITH Magazine’s (no relation!) website called The Pekar Project. Witney Matheson at USA Today’s Pop Candy Store covered the event. So Happy Birthday, Harvey. And thanks; [...]
Pekar, one of comics true originals, one of its most important writers, and an icon of the small press, reaches his 70th year this day. To celebrate, his new webcomic, The Pekar Project is running 70+ portraits of the master by a diverse array of artists. Click on the link for the whole show, [...]
§ If all profiles/travelogues were as good as Brian Heater’s account of a trip to Cleveland for Harvey Pekar’s 70th birthday, people wouldn’t wonder about the state of comics journalism. In five days, Harvey Pekar will turn 70, a fact commemorated by the cake in the center of the room, shaped like a giant [...]
INTERVIEW Daily Cross Hatch has a wonderful interview with Harvey Pekar - 70 years old and in the middle of his first webcomic project. An interview with Jeffrey Rowland , comics creator and T-shirt-shippin' mogul. An interview with Garry Trudeau, creator of Doonesbury . Given the long presence of Doonesbury on the web, I was surprised the Trudeau is hoping for newspapers to create some sort of news...
SPX! It wasn't just my imagination, SPX was more crowded this year . Chris Mautner has a nice write up of this year's SPX , (although I'm not sure I qualify for inclusion among "respected online personalities"). Also check out this year's Nerdlinger awards . It's too bad they're in Baltimore - Baltimore is a long ways from Bethesda! Maybe next year someone will organize a cool pre-SPX event...
Good morning Internet! Swine flu even at PAX?! (see Mike/Gabe's message) -- nice to see that the Penny Arcade crew is broadcasting useful information via the website and encouraging everyone to take care of themselves. That show seemed huge this year. I am looking forward to my probably futile hopes to attend PAX East (futile because something always comes up to deflect my physical travels much like...
Famed comic book writer and author of the autobiographical comic series American Splendor, Harvey Pekar, has announced a new online project, his own webcomics. The comic series, titled The Pekar Project , is set to be updated bi-weekly and will be hosted by the online writing and storytelling magazine, Smith. I'm a fan of Harvey's writing, but this new venture seems a little strange to me. One update...
