Marvel Masterworks: Fantastic Four vol. 3 Written & Illustrated by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby Published by Marvel Comics Man, I really appreciate that Marvel’s putting these old classic Marvel titles in affordable, quality editions. I appreciate why people like getting a giant chunk of story in the Essential or Showcase format, but I strongly prefer a color [...]
Comics Alliance has a particularly fascinating post up, going back to the days of yore — 1990, that is. In those glory days of million-selling comics, House of Ideas architect Stan Lee also did some video interviews with “Comic Book Greats” — and in this case, the interview is with Rob Liefeld. What’s so fascinating for me [...]
New toy packaging for Iron Man 2 has shown up online which shows the Mark VI armor and the action figure itself... In related news, Collider caught up with Stan Lee at the "SCREAM 2009" awards and he confirmed what his cameo in Iron Man 2 is and that Thor director Kenneth Branagh told him that he'll have a cameo, though he doesn't know what it is yet. You can watch the interview using the...
After returning from the sunny Midwest for a little R&R with the rest of Team Pepose, I’ve had some interesting stories popping up in my Inbox — especially with some news honoring one of the architects of the House of Ideas. And lo, there came… STAN LEE DAY! The Hero Initiative has posted a copy of [...]
Some thoughts on my latest borrowing from the New York Public Library: Okay, first, a little bit of comic book blasphemy: I really don’t like the Fantastic Four. (It’s not terribly surprising; they’re among the 99% of DC and Marvel’s pantheons that I’d say the same about.) The characters’ creators, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, authored [...]
For West Coasters the premiere event this weekend is the new Long Beach Comic-Con, running today through Sunday at the Long Beach Convention CenterAlthough a new show on the scene, it’s run by a veteran crew led by Martha Donato, and features a stellar guest list led by Stan Lee, Jim Lee and Berkeley Breathed, [...]
Heads up for Southern Californians: I'm happy to announce that "Sheldon" and I will be special guests at the first annual Long Beach Comic-Con, Oct 2-4, at the Long Beach Convention Center. I'm really rooting for this convention, as LA needs a great comics show...and this looks like it could be it. Already, the guest list includes cartoonists like Berke Breathed of "Bloom County",...
Walt Disney Company is buying Marvel . I think this won't change much -- just a consolidation of Marvel's focus on exploiting its roster of Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko/Chris Claremont/Etc created characters. Blog reactions No reactions yet.
Jim Shooter is supposed to famously (although probably anecdotally) have ordered Marvel pencillers to make certain that the splash page of each Marvel comic contained 1) the title hero(es) 2) in action 3) using their powers. I'm glad that story's just a made-up slur about Shooter (honestly, I liked his tenure at EIC of MC), because although an action-packed splash-page is an immediate adrenaline rush...
Stan “The Man” Lee will be opening this year’s Long Beach Comic Con, organizers have announced! The creator of Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Hulk will be hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony at this year’s convention, taking place on Friday, October 2nd. In addition, five fans who buy their tickets in advance will be chosen for a meet-and-greet [...]
Hey Look! was a strip that MAD creator Harvey Kurtzman did for Stan Lee in the late 1940s. Random one-page strips appeared in many comics, and a collector could spend years collecting them all. Denis Kitchen solved the problem by publishing a major compilation of the strips in 1992. A couple of months ago I showed you a portfolio of 10 later Hey Look! strips , showing Kurtzman's progression as a cartoonist,...
Some views and voices…we’re only gonna do this for a few days, don’t worry. We’ll be back at SBM on Friday am. § Brian Heater got to interview everyone fromThe Mighty Boosh to Seth to Stan Lee: He’s genuinely funny and warm during our interview, and while he doesn’t seem to precisely grasp the intricacies [...]
For those of you who didn’t watch Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night, you missed out on some comicky goodness! In last night’s episode, the comedian went to the San Diego Comic Con met up with industry figures like Stan Lee, Dan Didio, Geoff Johns, and Jon Favreau to discuss his comic book character, which [...]
