Despite being a proud Massachusettsian, I was busy working for the weekend and wasn’t able to hit the Boston Comic-Con this weekend, which featured comics creators ranging from Scott Wegener, Cliff Chiang, Walt Simonson, and many, many more. But to make things a little bit better for those who weren’t able to go, Chiang has posted [...]

Some thoughts on my latest borrowing from the New York Public Library: Okay, first, a little bit of comic book blasphemy: I really don’t like the Fantastic Four. (It’s not terribly surprising; they’re among the 99% of DC and Marvel’s pantheons that I’d say the same about.) The characters’ creators, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, authored [...]

DC Comics is kinda/sorta trying to get comics back in the newspapers, or at least online, with its new effort, Wednesday Comics, debuting today. It includes a lot of top talent — Neil Gaiman, Mike Allred, Paul Pope, Walter Simonson, Kurt Busiek, Kyle Baker — working on some of the DC stars — Superman, Batman, [...]

It totally is. In the US, anyway. In the UK tomorrow. It looks a bit like this… Though with a big old logo on top of it. There’s an eight page preview of it here. It’s $3.99, but apparently includes a re-print of Walt Simonson’s Beta Ray Bill origin, which is great for the reader and [...]

The flurry that surrounded the casting of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston in Thor has abated, leaving us in a "So, what now?" kind of zone. No one really knows what to expect out of the actors or the story. But CineFOOLS has a scoop on the latter, as they sat down with Thor co-writer Ashley Miller. He's such a fan of the series that he nearly pulled out his collection of bags and boards,...

CineFOOLS have a great interview with Ashley Miller. He is the screen writer for Kenneth Branagh's adaption of Thor for Marvel. Reading it does make me feel even happier about the project. Here are some of the main bits from it. Are you a fan of Thor? AM-Would you like me to pull my Simonson run out of its bags and boards? Zack had to take me down with an elephant tranq to stop me from throwing in...

This is the last of Simonson’s collections of his Thor run. My biggest gripe with the previous collection, the art of Sal Buscema, has considerably improved. Sometimes it looks like a mix of Simonson and Buscema, as if Simonson had provided rough drafts or concept art/basic panel designs and Buscema used that as the groundwork. [...]

This fourth collection of Simonson’s Thor run collects only four regular issues and the four issues of the mini-series Balder the Brave. It’s by far the weakest of all of Simonson’s Thor collections. First, there’s the issue of the Balder mini-series, whose story actually happens side-by-side with what happened in the previous collection and I [...]

AVON CALLING So I said I'd put a post up about this year's Bristol Comic Show. So here goes: Last year's show was fantastic for us. We had Studio Space , which launched at the show, plus Walter Simonson was over and he signed on our table with Dave Gibbons as did Dave Taylor. There were also a number of other US guests so the Commonwealth Museum was packed. One year on, the show is just in the Ramada,...

Although I enjoyed his work on other books, like Silver Surfer , Steve Englehart's run on Fantastic Four never quite worked for me. Granted, he was in the tough spot of following John Byrne's still-exemplary tenure, and then I was more excited to hear Walt Simonson would be taking over the book. By that point, since he knew he was going to be out, Englehart started burning off planned plotlines, writing...

The third TPB collecting Simonson’s Thor run starts very strong with Thor going into the underworld Hel to free some human souls who have been unjustly sent there. But instead of going as a petitioner like Orpheus Thor amasses an army of Asgardians (including modern fire arms brought from Earth) and forces his way in. [...]

The second Simonon Thor Visionaries TPB collects the Thor issues 349-355 (1984-1985) and 357-359 (1985). They wrap up the Surtur storyline in a very satisfying manner and then go on to deal with the aftermath of it. I really liked how Loki played a decisive role in the fight against Surtur, despite their earlier cooperation. [...]
