Sat. January 24th, 2009 - JEREMY FISHER

Victoria: As a curly-haired singer with an acoustic guitar, Fisher gets the requisite comparisons to Bob Dylan, while his boyish tenor, dexterous fingerpicking and electrifying hooks eerily recall Paul Simon.

Music: Dick Gaughan

[ November 28, 2008; 8:00 pm; ] The Scottish musician Dick Gaughan plays Dorchester Arts Centre on Friday 28th November. Gaughan has been at the cutting edge of Scottish music for over three decades and his vocal prowess, instrumental virtuosity and intelligence as a composer are legendary. The common thread running through all of Dick Gaughan's work is his passion for social justice and telling it...

'Coloureds' of Africa won't claim mixed-race Barack Obama

The acclamation of Barack Obama as America's first black president ignores one salient fact: Obama is not black. His father was indeed black, but his mother was white.…

memphis slim - sings the blues (2007)

An amazingly prolific artist who brought a brisk air of urban sophistication to his frequently stunning presentation, John "Peter" Chatman — better known as Memphis Slim — assuredly ranks with the greatest blues pianists of all time. He was smart enough to take Big Bill Broonzy's early advice about developing a style to call his own to heart, instead of imitating that of his idol, Roosevelt Sykes....

The M M and M 1000 - part 3

Here’s the third batch of Music Musings and Miscellany’s unapologetically subjective selection of the twentieth century’s best 1000 singles. ELVIS COSTELLO – Alison / Welcome to the Working Week (Stiff 14 1977) SLOWDIVE – Alison (from the Outside Your Room EP, Creation 119 1993) Costello’s “Alison” is rather a cruel little ballad, mixing pity and contempt for [...]

Studs Terkel, 1912-2008

Studs Terkel [via] Studs Terkel [WP, WQ], oral historian, broadcaster, activist, has checked out at 96. I never knew, until just now, that Terkel was amongst the first few radio personalities to be referred to as a “disc jockey”: …in 1945 he was given his own radio show, “The Wax Museum,” on WENR. Although “The Wax Museum,” [...]

BIG BILL BROONZY - Where The Blues Began

This forty-track double disc is one of the best of the many Big Bill Broonzy-compilations on the market, especially considering the price, and it does a great job summarizing Big Bill's thirty-year career. William Lee Conley Broonzy was a huge source of inspiration to many younger bluesmen, Muddy Waters and Memphis Slim among them, and once you've heard him do "I Can't Be Satisfied", "Worrying You...

New BB King album

I've only heard three tracks so far, but this new album by BB King looks and sounds "the business". Released in August and produced by T Bone Burnett, it features a set of old songs played by a band that includes Dr. John, Nathan East and Jim Keltner. The recording was done in the style of the fifties, and to my ears the tracks I've heard sound great - rather than have a load of guest musicians

BIG BILL BROONZY: Part 2 (1937-1940) Remastered (JSP Box)

"Big Bill" was born William Lee Conley Broonzy in Scott County, Mississippi, one of Frank Broonzy and Mittie Belcher's 17 children. Broonzy claimed he was born in 1893, and many sources report that year. But after his death his twin sister produced a birth certificate giving it as 1898, the currently accepted date. Soon after his birth the family moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where Bill spent most...

CARTROUBLE, PART ONE

Dive complained in a comment on a recent post on here that he didn't know much about current popular music because he is old. I'm nearly as old as him, and don't know very much about current popular music either. What I do know about it is a bit random. There comes a point in your life when it seems a bit unseemly to be "up" on, I dunno, bassline house, or whatever happens to be fashionable

VA: Classic Blues from Smithsonian Folkways (2003)

A living and dynamic tradition, blues is forged in hard times but powerful enough to bring on the good times. Legends such as Lead Belly, Memphis Slim, Big Bill Broonzy, Elizabeth Cotten, Sonny Terry, and Brownie McGhee, among others formed the "blues backbone" of Folkways Records. This compilation from the Smithsonian Folkways collection spans half a century and features Delta, St. Louis, Southwest,...
