See the full interview here I started playing in the mid 1970's. I was born in East Chicago, Indiana, in 1962. When I was six or so my family moved to Davenport, Iowa. That's where I grew up, mostly. None of the other kids at school were into what I was; you may remember this was the era of disco and heavy metal, nobody I knew was really into blues or folk music. I was always fascinated by acoustic...

Black Water Rising by Attica Locke Black Water Rising sounds like it could be the name of a blues number sung by Bessie Smith or Memphis Minnie. And, in its own way, Locke's book is a kind of blues for the generation that came of age, as Locke's parents did, during the days of the civil rights and black power movements, and had to contend with its aftermath. Set in Houston during the Reagan era, it's...

I won't argue plagiarism in the music business. It happens & has been happening for a century or more (how many versions of Stagger Lee are there?) The real crime is how these original artists were treated. Don' talk about royalites not received now. Most NEVER received any royalties. $5 or $10 or $20 (maybe!) to record a song and then the music company owned the rights and the artist never saw...
Lucinda Williams reviewed at Park West in Chicago
Chicago Tribune (Free subscription) | 10/15/2009
Louisiana-born singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams, perhaps best known for her heart-wrenching confessionals on love-gone-wrong, seemed struck by her youthful optimism as she reached deep into her back catalog for a solo turn on "Sharp Cutting Wings (Song to a Poet)." "I kind of dusted this one off," said Williams. "I was so young and romantic then."
Folk, Gospel & Blues - Will the Circle Be Unbroken

I don't think I can recommend this mp3 album more enthusiastically. I love it, and think that fans of the blues, folk music, and gospel music will too. Just check out the various artist who are included here. The cool part about mp3 albums is that you only have to buy the tracks that you like, but in this case each track is a keeper. Go away. Are you still here? How did that happen? Did you get lost trying to turn around and go out the way you came in? It's really very simple, you know. Just put one foot to the side, then swing the other across... oh, heck, just shuffle until you have your nose pointed in the opposite direction. Go on, now, you can do it. I know you can. I've seen much less-developed animals figure this one out....

Night falls and we are lost in the Smokies. Where's our cabin? Precipitous falls to the left and the right. Our host, the driver, is edgy. We get out and walk - the road's too steep for the car. What...

REVIEW: Buckwheat Zydeco – Lay Your Burden Down
Geezer Music Club (Free subscription) | 07/10/2009
It’s probably an overused expression, but it’s difficult to avoid the label of “living legend” when describing someone like Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural, Jr. The Louisiana native, whose stage name is also the name of his group — Buckwheat Zydeco — is still going strong after more than four decades of bringing his distinctive music to [...]
