Toadcast #95 – The Craigcast Pt.2

I think it would be only fair to describe this podcast as a little bit messy. We recorded it immediately after first Craigcast two weeks ago, and so by the end of it we were all fucking hammered. I promise I have tried to edit out as much of the madness as I could, but [...]

Fred and Annie Mae McDowell - My Home is in the Delta (Testament, 1995)

Like many bluesmen, Mississippi Fred McDowell was as familiar with spirituals and gospel music as he was with the deep blues. It wasn’t unusual for bluesmen to play the gutbucket music on Saturday night and the sanctified music on Sunday morning. This collection finds the great guitarist and singer playing several selections of blues accompanied by only his percussive slide guitar playing before...

Compare and Contrast (An Occasional Series): Blues With a Feeling

Saw the Maysles Bros. new Rolling Stones flick Get Yer Ya-Yas Out the other day -- my review will be up over at Box Office momentarily I think -- and one of the best scenes is Mick and Keith doing an unplugged version of "You Gotta Move." Mick, at his most transparently disingenuous, prefaces it by saying "We've been trying to find out who wrote it, but we don't know." Actually,...

Toadcast #93 – The Craigcast

I have a friend Craig who works in Waterstones and is an obsessive about old American folk music and, more specifically, blues. He has been making Neil Meursault mix CDs for ages, which I’ve heard and consistently found myself asking what the hell I was listening to. I usually hate the tedious collections of old [...]

The GOOD Stuff

I won't argue plagiarism in the music business. It happens & has been happening for a century or more (how many versions of Stagger Lee are there?) The real crime is how these original artists were treated. Don' talk about royalites not received now. Most NEVER received any royalties. $5 or $10 or $20 (maybe!) to record a song and then the music company owned the rights and the artist never saw...

Some Music...

Hey, Kiddies... 'Tis time for some blues music for (mostly) electric guitar... This is Jeff Beck playing Ray Charles' Drown In My Own Tears. He's OK, I guess... If you like talent. Speaking of talent, here's Johnny Winter playing Be...

Mississippi Fred McDowell - (self titled) (Rounder, 1995)

Fred McDowell of Como, Missisippi was one of the great originals of modern blues music. After playing guitar and singing the blues and gospel music for friends and family for many years and developing a completely unique style, he was “discovered” in the late 1950’s and went on to have a successful late life recording career. He toured and influenced many young rock and blues musicians,...

A free album for download, for you who likes Jansch, Fahey and the rest of 'em

Hi all, I'm giving away my album which was released couple of months ago here in Israel. Here are couple of words about it (on the bottom - the downloadable link) : Armed with a 12 strings acoustic guitar, an intoxicated banjo and a cheeky Weissenborn, amongst other soaked instruments, Israel's Yair Yona adapts his British Folk influences and his love for the groundbreaking guitar works of John Fahey,...

Thank You Thursdays: Badass Bonnie Raitt

Vanessa and I went to hear Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal in Prospect Park last night and I was, once again, reminded of why Bonnie Raitt is literally one of the coolest women alive (Taj was awesome too, of course!)....

Kicking Mule

In the folk and country blues revival of the 1960s he was listening to Broonzy, Brownie McGhee and Lightnin' Hopkins and beginning to collect old 78 rpm records from the 1920s and 1930s. This brought him into contact with other collectors, including John Fahey, Ed Denson, Bernie Klatzko, Tom Hoskins and Nick Perls. Collecting the 78s developed into searching for the artists who had recorded them, with...
