Michael Giberson I haven’t been much of a radio music fan since, I don’t know, high school. I liked music that wasn’t played much by the local radio stations and in general the signal-to-noise ratio on most radio stations was too small. Cassette tapes, then CDs were part of the answer, but that cuts off access [...]
I made two good decisions during the 2008 Jazz Fest: to see Eddie Bo, and to see Snooks Eaglin. Both passed away before the 2009 Fest, so if I had missed them in 2008, I would have missed them forever....
This posthumous reissue of the country-blues veteran's first album for Black Top Records reminds you just how damn good a guitarist Eaglin was. Say hello to a rarely heard classic.
Episode 31 "Pass The Bottle" Tapestry of the Times In this musical pub-crawl, we explore the joys and perils of the drinking life; songs about beer, wine, whiskey and moonshine; sad drunks, mad drunks, mean drunks, and just plain stupid drunks; booze-soaked classics from Memphis Slim, Roscoe Holcomb, Lead Belly, Dock Boggs, and more. Tapestry of the Times: Real music, real people, and the...

Drummer John Vidacovich and bassist James Singleton are Jazz Fest vets. They played at the first one in 1970 (with the blind R&B singer Snooks Eaglin) and were back this year in their long-running modern-jazz quartet Astral Project with saxophonist Tony Dagradi and guitarist Steve Masakowski. But the hot set I got was at the [...]
That brief clip isn’t necessarily representative of what goes on over at Tapestry of the Times , but there’s a bit of Snooks Eaglin . And there aren’t too many things better than hearing that man play guitar. Shouts to Shane Carpenter for the video.
The New Orleans guitarist and singer Snooks Eaglin displayed a breathtaking dexterity, combined with an amazing ability to remember over 2,000 tunes that earned him the nickname "the human jukebox". This endeared him both to local audiences in the Crescent City and to many of the rock musicians visiting the area; Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Bonnie Raitt and Robert Plant admired his inimitable...

Actually, although he wasn’t fond of travelling, he came to Europe on numerous occasions, first visiting Britain in 1977. However, the largest number of European fans got to hear him when in 1988 he brought his New Orleans Rhythm and Blues Band to play for a week at the Ascona Festival in Switzerland, and then undertook a ten-day tour around Switzerland, Italy and Germany with other players from...

This afternoon I went to the wake of Antoinette K-Doe. I was looking forward to eating some gumbo with her at St Louis Cemetery #2 next All Saint's Day. The funeral for Snooks Eaglin' is this weekend also. The passing of both of these unique individuals reminds me how unusually special this city is. Rest in peace Antoinette and Snooks, and thanks.photo by Howie Luvzus
They're burying Snooks Eaglin in New Orleans today. And there will be a farewell to Antoinette K-Doe at the Mother in Law Lounge this weekend. Sad to see two NO icons go at the same time. I'm sure many tears will be shed and a few Hurricanes consumed. A big send off is planned for Snooks at the Howlin' Wolf club, with Irma Thomas, Allen Toussaint and Deacon John scheduled to perform, while a 'visitation'...
