I believe...We were raised as down-to-earth as possible. I'm grateful for it. I was 10 years old when John [Johnny Cash] came into my life. Of course, my mom [country singer June Carter] was already real famous, and I was aware of the hoo-ha that surrounded them together. It's OK to take your time. It's taken me 13 years to get around to recording my new album and that's because I got busy with life....

Anybody else a Carlene Carter fan? She just released her first album in thirteen years, Stronger , and it's excellent. I don't really understand why she wasn't a much bigger star, as she had it all: great songs, voice, and production, abundant charisma, and obviously easy on the eyes. Plus it's authentic country, not the watered down, fake contemporary style, which is just sappy pop music sung through...

Carter lost four family members in 2003: mother June, sister Rosie, partner Howie Epstein and stepdad Johnny Cash. Not a good year, and it bottomed out a not hugely productive passage of life in general – her last new work came out in 1995. Life seems to have improved since and ‘Stronger’, though sunk firmly in the grief-and renewal groove you’d expect, makes for a broadly enjoyable return. Carlene’s...

"This hell-raising angel's had her fair share of heartache," sings Carlene Carter on the title track of her first album in 13 years. She ain't kidding: a drug-fuelled train-wreck in the finest country tradition, she was heading for the buffers when the deaths in 2003 of mom June Carter, stepdad Johnny Cash, boyfriend Howie Epstein and sister Rosey shocked her into straightening out.

For a woman who's endured monumental personal turmoil, Carlene Carter's conversation is remarkably breezy and lighthearted, regularly punctuated with ironic and self-deprecating chuckles. She was enjoying a working vacation in Jamaica recently when she ca

This is why you should care about Carlene Carter: She puts her whole life into her music in a way few artists dare or accomplish. Not just snippets of a diary. I mean her life experience, her guts and her whole psyche. It goes in there. It's not always a

Those of us who love Carlene Carter have been waiting patiently for her. We’ve been waiting for her to emerge from more than a decade out of the spotlight, a time during which she lost several loved ones and battled substance abuse. Our patience has been rewarded. In 2006, Carter put her toe back in the water, recording [...]

Pain and loss were the singer's constant companions. But the daughter of June Carter Cash found the strength to return to songwriting. WITH her once ash blond hair now auburn, progressive country's crown princess Carlene Carter is the spitting image of her mother June Carter Cash. Heads turn when Maybelle Carter's granddaughter walks into the Sunset Grill, a Music City watering hole frequented by the...

I've always loved Carlene Carter's music and her new album, Stronger, looks to be an emotionally charged collection dealing with the losses of several folks very close to her, including the 2003 heroin-related death of Heartbreakers bassist Howie Epstein.

Carter’s always been tough and edgy, but now she seems self-confident. “I’m so cool,” she sings with a growl some 25-plus years after she first wrote the tune, and you believe her.

As any loyal Popdose reader with a lingering affection for British power pop surely knows, the name of this column is cribbed from Nick Lowe’s 1978 album Jesus of Cool, which just last week was re-released on CD Stateside with its intended title. (Its initial U.S. release, in hugely bastardized form, was titled Pure [...]
