While a member of Blur, multi-instrumentalist Graham Coxon released four solo albums, mixing garage rock, folk and heavy riffs with the band’s trademark power pop. Since his departure from Blur in 2002, Coxon has made three more records. The latest is grounded in a passion for English folk music, heavily influenced by Bert Jansch, and [...]
My last Dusted review for the year is up today. It’s Jay Bolotin’s self-titled folk album, briefly available around its 1970 release, then lost for decades until Locust Music picked it up for reissue. Here’s part of the review: Another in the parade of long-lost singer-songwriter records recently recovered and dusted off for contemporary consideration, Jay Bolotin’s self-titled...
I used to listen to Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Pentangle quite a lot, way back. I've never forgotten how good a guitar player Bert is, and I also like the way he has of phrasing his words. Must get round to adding this song to my solo repertoire.

Signed to fledgling London-based independent label Tape Records, Theo Bard is a singer-songwriter also residing in the capital. Not to be confused with Birmingham’s chamber-folk combo Shady Bard, the five-track Lis ten Carefully EP marks Theo’s debut release, on the back of several gigs which have won him a steadily growing fan-base.
The Chris Brokaw Guitar Trio with Alan Licht/Greg Kelley/Sean Meehan The Knitting Factory October 8, 2009 The new Knitting Factory is a transplant from the old downtown Tribeca location to this new space in Brooklyn's Williamsburg district. It might seem superficially out-of-the-way, but it's only two stops on the subway out of Manhattan, followed by a five-minute stroll...
When we hear the guitar playing style of Johnny Marr, or Neil Clark of The Commotions, or Roddy Frame, it sounds timeless. But what is the lineage? Marr's playing on William, It Was Really Nothing in particular evokes something of an earlier time, but I can't place the references. Suggestions on a postcard etc...
One way that guitarists expand the harmonic possibilities of their instrument is through the use of open tunings. By tuning the guitar differently than the standard EADGBE arrangement (for instance, to an open chord), a whole new world of sounds and textures becomes available. New age guitarists were quick to adopt this method to create beautiful melodies that went nowhere. Dave Evans, however, was...
The Moon has held a strange fascination over our imaginations ever since our hominid ancestors first looked up and gazed upon our closest companion. The Moon has been seen as the abode of strange beings, the cause of Madness (hence Lunacy), the power that triggers Lycanthropy and many other things too. Musically, Moon has traditionally been rhymed with June, but that hasn't stopped musicians using...
I guess I’ll be disclosing my ancient age, but 1968 was a pivotal year in my life. The U.S. industrial-military complex decided that in order to expand & maintain their imperialist war in Vietnam that it was necessary to institute a Draft Lottery for the inscription of young men into the war machine. My lottery number was 40. I was destined for tropical Southeast Asia unless things in my...

Of British folk singer-guitarist Bert Jansch’s three mid-Seventies albums, reissued by Drag City, 1975’s Santa Barbara Honeymoon was fine writing overdressed in L.A.-pop rhinestones, and 1977’s A Rare Conundrum featured Jansch’s burred voice and fluid picking with a backing that recalled the concentrated intricacies of his earlier band Pentangle. L.A. Turnaround, from 1974,...
BRETT ANDERSON - SLOW ATTACK Citing Argentinean film score composer Gustavo Santaolalla and British folk legend Bert Jansch as influences, his new album Slow Attack sees Brett Anderson exploring the abstract rather than the lyrical, choosing to abandon traditionally narrative songs and instead, as he himself puts it, ‘using words as impressionistic brushstrokes’. In equal parts both cinematic...
