It's not often an album from the 60's and 70's takes me totally by surprise, but Swaddling Songs, by Mellow Candle did. This long sought after record still sells for hundreds of pounds among vinyl collectors. In many ways it is typical of the 60s/70s folk rock period; eclectic, with a nod to Trees, Pentangle, Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention, Spyrogira and even CSN, but as a whole it is complete, beautifully...
I used to listen to Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Pentangle quite a lot, way back. I've never forgotten how good a guitar player Bert is, and I also like the way he has of phrasing his words. Must get round to adding this song to my solo repertoire.
STARLESS & BIBLE BLACK Shape Of The Shape Locust FOLK / AMERICANA LP Possibly the closest thing the UK has to its very own version of Espers, Starless & Bible Black return, this time on Static Caravan, having previously released their eponymous debut on Locust. The Mancunian group retreated to a village hall nestled somewhere within the Snowdonian mountains to record this album, and they sound...
In February 2009, Vetiver released their album, Tight Knit, a homely collection of soft songwriting that went against the grain of the more dark and introspective experimentation of previous outing To Find Me Gone. Another band who found themselves amid the flurry of freak-folk's awakening earlier this decade, Animal Collective, released in Merriweather Post Pavilion a record that focused on the domestic,...

Right on the southern extreme of the parish, just before you reach the roundabout on the edge of Hornington, and at the end of a long road, is a row of apparently unremarkable cottages. But they bear a remarkable name: Only the occupants of one of the houses seem to have taken the name to heart, and have a gargoyle on the wall and a pentangle in an upper window. Of course I will have to call, and enquire...
Of British folk singer-guitarist Bert Jansch’s three mid-Seventies albums, reissued by Drag City, 1975’s Santa Barbara Honeymoon was fine writing overdressed in L.A.-pop rhinestones, and 1977’s A Rare Conundrum featured Jansch’s burred voice and fluid picking with a backing that recalled the concentrated intricacies of his earlier band Pentangle. L.A. Turnaround, from 1974,...

I had the first three album that are featured on the above video. The second album Bert Jansch was one of my favorite guitarists also he was a member of one of my favorite bands at that time "Pentangle"
Marc Spitz, Brendan Mullen’s co-author of the seminal “We Got the Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story of L.A. Punk,” granted the Daily Swarm permission to re-print his remembrance of Brendan in its entirety. Marc Spitz’s Blog : Brendan October 14, 2009 by mspitz He was wearing a fishing hat the day that I met him in person, which i thought was strange for an original punk. I’d...
The ground-breaking 60’s group Jacqui McShee’s Pentangle will prove they’re still going strong with a performance in Lichfield. Despite many changes in their line-up, the group still continue to cover new ground with their musical efforts. The current line up features singer Jacqui McShee with Gerry Conway on drums, Spencer Cozens on keyboards, Alan Thompson on bass [...]
Folk music is arguably among the most authentic musical expressions. And, few did it as well as Pentangle . Their specialty was Medieval Folk Music. I may add more entries to this post -- check back. For now, we’ll start with The Hunting Song: Click here to view the lyrics in a new browser instance. Lyke Wake Dirge derives from a 15th century English poem. It may be most emblematic of Pentangle’s...
From Bat for Lashes to Wild Beasts, pop's love affair with paganism has blossomed into a musical harvest The day before his wedding my father asked me to sew an acorn on to the hem of his shirt. The shirt was red. The wedding was rainbow-coloured. There was a fire pit involved. As you can imagine, paganism is to me what a drunk uncle dancing is to others: far too closely associated with your parents...
Band on the Wall, Manchester legendary jazz venue isn't all about the bop. Nope, they dig folk too. And with that, they're having a load of cool folk gigs from acts old and new. Mercury Music Prize nominees The Unthanks...
