Time for some new music, after a week of looking back. There's a new single (album coming up) from Isabelle Boulay , dedicated to the fall. Chanson pour les mois d'hiver isn't Les feuilles mortes (there's a tad more sunlight), but a grown-up, solid song that steers on the right side of mainstream to appeal to me. Clara plume (pictured) is, like Luciole for instance, a slammeuse (a young poet that...

Most fans in France barely tolerate Raymond Domenech but he has found one in Catherine Renger, a well known chanteur who gives him a dose of unabashed adulation with her song Le Kiffe Raymond ( I fancy Raymond). The...

The hapless coach of the French national soccer team, in danger of being run out of the country for his team’s poor play, is now suddenly popular, all because a former porno actress has written a hit song about him. So typical. Sample lyric of the song Je Kiffe Raymond (I Fancy Raymond): “If he [...]

Beleaguered French boss, Raymond Domenech is questioned widely in the French football circles for his tactics and abilities to guide France to the World Cup Finals in 2010. France is struggling to reach the Finals and may have to go through the ordeal of a play-off to get to South Africa. Though vilified by fans and players, one person remain an ardent admirer of the French national team manager....

Football and pop have never been very happy bedfellows, as Messrs Hoddle, Waddle, Keegan and Barnes can attest. For most players it is enough of a challenge constructing a post-match press conference sentence that keeps the 'to be fairs' to a minimum, so to ask them to be able to sing as well is a bit of a stretch.Perhaps the music is best left to the professionals and the latest football inspired hit...

He is the French Steve McClaren, a hapless figure under fire from football fans, commentators and even his own players as his side struggles to qualify for the World Cup. But at least Raymond Domenech, manager of the French national team, can claim a quality that McClaren never advertised — sex appeal — and it may help to turn around his fortunes.

So much great French music is out now, or will be released very soon. There's new albums by Mickey3D (see below ), by M, by Murat and by Miossec (what's up with all those M's'). The latter has his seventh cd out, Finisteriens. He made it with Yann Tiersen and it's a firm stew of songs that reek of Northern France - full of waves, fish, fierce winds and weathered faces. I'm posting the single, A Montmartre....

French duo Fred Chichin and Catherine Ringer met at a theater production in the late ’70s and an instant musical bond was formed, one that took them from rock to synthpop and back again. Recording under the name Les Rita Mitsouko, the duo found success in Europe and eventually scored an American record deal with [...]

Why the hell haven't I heard of Les Rita Mitsouko until now? This French super-duo has been around since 1980 but only came to my attention last week via this BoingBoing post on the music videos of director Jean-Baptiste Mondino. Specifically,...

Les Rita Mitsouko "C'est Comme Ça" from The No Comprendo Although Jean-Baptiste Mondino has directed music videos for huge artists like Madonna, Bjork and Chris Isaak, my favorite video of all time is for the relatively unknown Les Rita Mitsouko. Mondino was helped considerably by the frantic sexy robotics of Catherine Ringer, the windmill gyrations of guitarist Fred Chichin and, the...
