The first in a 14-part series analyzing and showcasing the entirety of Green Day's 1994 pop-punk masterpiece Dookie . All the recent name-checking of classic albums from 1994 on this blog got me thinking: wow, wasn’t that a great year for rock music? Thinking about the Sound Affects posts on Blur and "Soundgarden" as I chowed down at a fast food joint, I instinctively rattled album...
This Devo two-fer from 1980 is a hoot! Girl U Want is by far the strongest of the two songs, Devo at their best. Please forgive the video quality and the occasional audio glitch. I always felt that Devo was more influential than they really got credit for. They have been honored by plenty of bands -- Nirvana , Soundgarden, Sepultura and Pearl Jam , just to name a few.
The decades-old rock band -- who has inspired the likes of Nirvana and Soundgarden -- play the Bowery Ballroom tonight. For tickets and more information, call 212-533-2111 or visit www.boweryballroom.com. ...
How The Angels Helped Create Grunge By Darryl Mason Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready, in an interview with Kathy McCabe, praises The Angels : I grew up on (The Angels albums) No Exit and Night Attack...That is the Australian music that meant so much to me, maybe because me and my friends were the only ones who knew them." Here's the (now pretty hilarious) album cover, and name change, the American...

Lady Gaga debuted a brand spankin' new video out for her single "Bad Romance" this week, and I'm not over-exaggerating when I say it's like throwing a Matthew Barney film into a blender with Britney Spears , Hype Williams , True Blood , pyrotechnics, Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" video and they gayest man you know. Obviously this equals crazy fa-bu-lous. Truth be told, I still...

A Canadian original : Of United Empire Loyalists stock, Peck commanded the 16th (Canadian Scottish) Battalion in the First World War (a regiment that boasted four VC winners), and led his unit from the front in 10 major battles of the Great War with his personal piper at his side. I still can’t get my head around Dirty Projectors ’ madly growing popularity. Don’t get me wrong: I’m happy a band with such a thorny sound can pack a club like Neumos (I arrived just as the band were walking onstage and instantly hit a solid wall of humanity). But when you break down the group’s component parts, they don’t add up to typical ’00s commercial...

In 1989, I was lucky enough to discover Soundgarden two years before the grunge revolution. I read a rave about Louder Than Love in what was at that time my musical bible: Circus magazine. After a steady stream of Anthrax, Metallica, and Megadeth, I was floored at how heavy a band could be by playing so slow. Two years later, I was somewhat disappointed by Badmotorfinger, partly because the sound wasn't...
I, along with several folks more coherent than I, was asked by John Ottinger III of Grasping for the Wind for my favorite SF endings . Go over there and tell me if I sound like a blathering idiot or just your normal garden-variety idiot. Don't worry, I can handle it. It's nothing hours of psychotherapy can't cure. And I have a frequent crier card, so there.
