The Howard. Just mention the legendary theater in a room full of Washingtonians old enough to remember the place in its heyday and listen. Everyone has a story. For decades, the Howard Theatre was a mecca for black entertainers such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway, James Brown, the Supremes, the Drifters. Then the lights went out. It's been years since the theater went...

Le Corbeau (1943, France) - An anonymous letter writer spreads dark accusations in a small town. The town is so full of depraved people that practically everyone could be the culprit, or at least are so unlikeable that you don't mind them being falsely accused of it. Watched it all. Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (1943, USA) - By the undead eyebrows of Bela Lugosi, how many are there of these? Watched:...

Later, the business all but forgot her — she was forced to toil as domestic help for a time —...

The Avett Brothers brought their new single, "Slight Figure of Speech," onto Fallon last night, trying their best to bring a hootenanny experience to late night TV (and sorta succeeding, if you count those three people who dance in the background). Two things of note: One, scatting is never a good vocal technique, unless you're Cab Calloway, and two, a cello is not a rocking instrument,...

I liked Sykes’ Sammy Sosa jokes more than the ones George Lopez made on his new talk show earlier in the week. Commenting on the media chatter about Sosa’s skin appearing lighter, Sykes sidekick, Keith Robinson, said, “He looks like Cab Calloway now.” “He just needs a zoot suit,” added Sykes. I always like people with a sense of history.

- “How Big Can You Get'” is the eighth Big Bad Voodoo Daddy album. For this album they pay tribute to the late, great Cab Calloway and released it on the year of what would have been his 100th birthday. In the tradition of Norman McLaren’s Begone Dull Care, in which he expressed Oscar Peterson’s jazz music with animated shapes, dots, and lines, here Jack Delgado (aka Michael Gray) animates the music of Cab Calloway using authentic Art Deco motifs and designs. An intra-family fracas regarding the service mark CAB CALLOWAY for retail music store and entertainment services was won by the late band leader's grandson, Christopher Brooks. He proved prior rights in the mark THE CAB CALLOWAY ORCHESTRA for musical recordings and entertainment services, and therefore the Board found confusion likely under Section 2(d) and sustained his opposition against a corporation...
