The plan was to suffocate Alex Ovechkin. Literally, apparently. With Francois Beauchemin requesting a chance to play against the Washington star as often as possible, and with Ovechkin struggling to catch his breath in the heavy air of the ACC, the Maple Leafs were able to squeak out their fourth triumph of the season by a 2-1 shootout score.

Review: Sheila Jordan 81st birthday gig (Bull's Head, London Jazz Festival, November 18th 2009, review by Georgia Mancio) "It’s quite something to stand up and convey a song. It looks easy…," mused a member of the audience at the busy Bull’s Head on Wednesday night. "...but it’s difficult to convey overly emotive songs, and it’s difficult to convey jokey...

European Jazz Jamboree Berlin, Germany September 18-24, 2009 20 years after the Berlin Wall came down, the global appreciation of Germany's jazz is arguably finally getting its due, with no small help from the European Jazz Jamboree (EJJ). In its sophomore year, EJJ has quickly garnered attention throughout Europe, and now the States, too, is (and/or should be) taking notice. Founded and run by entrepreneur...

Tenor saxophonist Albert Ayler performed his greatest music in a state of spiritual ecstasy. Like fellow seekers John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, he looked to use music as a Buddhist might use meditation or a Baptist might speak in tongues: to make contact with something greater than himself. Recorded in Copenhagen on September 14th, 1964, this may be the finest group Ayler ever led. Featuring the...

I, for one, am tired of hearing it. With a tired Calgary team, they couldn’t take advantage of it. Why? Their team game still isn’t anywhere close to being there. Their polar opposite special teams definitely didn’t help. The Leafs came into the game with the 3rd ranked powerplay and it’s the first time I [...]

The reason for concern is obvious. While players...

Don and Ron View full size photo » Being an American who follows the Leafs from his home in New England I get an interesting look into the subtle cultural differences between the Northeast and Canada. To be honest there's less of a difference between being in Massachusetts and Ontario than there is between Massachusetts and Arizona, but because Canada is an entirely different country there's...
