I missed the anniversary of jazz violinist and legendary practical joker Joe Venuti’s death (14 Aug 1978), and we haven’t quite reached the anniversary of his birth (16 Sept 1903), so here’s a little in-between tribute: an all-too-brief colour feature of him and his childhood friend, fellow Italian-American and musical partner, guitarist Eddie Lang in 1929: … … now you...

The Guardian nicked my idea! Well, kinda. Here’s the latest batch of Music Musings and Miscellany’s unapologetically subjective selection of the twentieth century’s best 1000 singles. ‘Alf of the aitches.. Here's Lonnie Johnson playing some blues on a European tour - possibly Manchester - in the early Sixties: What stands out are those lovely single-string runs he fits in between lines, and the exceptional solo. He sings pretty well too,...

link One of my favorite albums from Yazoo with the Robert Armstrong cover. It's perfect to paint by. No singing, just pure guitar music. Listen to a few more tracks and buy the album here: Yazoo His name was Salvatore Massaro a.k.a. Eddie Lang (1902-1933). He died tragically at a young age during a botched tonsillectomy. He was a jazz guitar virtuoso. Read more about Eddie . The Art of Amy Crehore
