It was a night of great music in Park Slope's JJ Byrne Park, featuring local performers, as well as a group that harked from the far reaches of Jersey City. The night also marked the near-end of a culture-filled July in that ever-so-lively park. The month included: Midsummer's Night Dream by Piper Theater, Opera on Tap, the Democracy in Action film series (Manchurean Candidate, The Candidate and 1776)...

“(C)2008 Jelmer de Haas” July 19th - Waiting for William Bell at an Amsterdam hotel, I was sipping on some coffee while all the classic Soul hits played in the background. The records from Stax and Motown, that once shook the world, struck me as the perfect background to interview the man who was a big [...]

Jimmy McGriff, the acclaimed blues organist, who scored his first hit in the 1960s with an instrumental arrangement of “I’ve Got A Woman,” then continued to record hard swinging grooves that appealed to audiences across musical boundaries, died Saturday at a nursing home in New Jersey. He was 72. The cause of death was not known but was believed to be heart failure, said his wife, Margaret McGriff....

I've Got A Woman Part 1 JIMMY McGRIFF 1936-2008 I got the sad news today over at Funky 16 Corners that organ groove guru Jimmy McGriff has left us. One of the last of a breed, his good time music defied categorization. This smokin' number we have here was his first record, and sounds as fresh today as when it was released over 45 years ago. Part II was posted on The B Side in January of 2006, as part...

Imagine a young Calvin Newborn, migrating from Beale Street to the Big Apple in the mid-1950s: Guitar in hand, he pounded the big city pavement from Birdland to Broadway, earning the nickname "UpCity" from none other than Miles Davis, who was more than impressed with the Memphis musician. Over the last five decades, Calvin - the brother of jazz virtuoso Phineas Newborn - has bounced from Memphis to...

Recorded at The Hit Factory, New York, New York. This superbly produced 1981 gem boasts original material by legendary rock 'n' roll songwriter Doc Pomus in collaboration with keyboardist Dr. John, in addition to pungent horn charts arranged by jazz altoist Hank Crawford. Pomus spent the second half of his career writing a kind of perfectly spare "wisdom" song, and B.B. King's impassioned gospel-blues...

Jobbing alto sax players all over the world owe a debt to Hank Crawford, whose funky, soulful, split-reed wail was copied by David Sanborn on 'Young Americans', after which everyone else copied the copy. This compilation from the Memphis sax-man's LPs for the Atlantic label – mainly from the Sixties, when he was with Ray Charles – contains some absolutely stonking honks, including a moody "Angel Eyes",...
