Tommy Flanagan plays Rain Check in Cologne in 1991. For about two decades until his death a few years ago, Flanagan had a trio with bassist George Mraz (whose nickname was “Bounce” because that’s what a bad Czech does) and a succession of drummers, most more poised than Bobby Durham is here, frankly. Hearing Tommy [...]

This evening we went to the George & Dragon in Thames Ditton to see the John Barnes quartet, but John was absent so the musicians were Terry Ede (tenor sax, Soprano sax, clarinet and flute, pictured), Alan Berry (keyboard, pictured), Mick Durelle (string bass) and Don Cook (drums). Jim Trimmer (vocals, pictured) joined the band for two numbers. The numbers we enjoyed most were: 1) Recado , about...

If the name {{Bernt Rosengren = 3919}} doesn't ring a bell, it probably would if you lived in Sweden. Rosengren, an unabashed champion of such implacable hard-boppers as {{Gene Ammons = 3405}}, {{Hank Mobley = 9478}}, {{Dexter Gordon = 7127}} and {{Johnny Griffin = 7239}}, has been one of that country's leading tenor saxophonists for more than half a century, and as his latest CD affirms, he's still...

Concord Records is wrapping up its epic reissue program of saxophonist John Coltrane’s music recorded for the Prestige label in the late 1950’s. As the name implies, this set tracks Coltrane’s appearances as a sideman for the label. His most notable sideman appearances during this period are outside the scope of this set, and those performances with Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis...

From the mid thirties, with the rise of Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young, to the death of Coltrane in 1967--a thirty year stretch more or less--is what I could call the golden age of the saxophone. Dominant swing era sax players, aside from Bean and Pres, include Ben Webster, Chu Berry, Johnny Hodges, and Benny Carter. Charlie Parker revolutionizes jazz and the 50s show a plethora of postbop players:...

I'm listening to Carmell Jones and Harold Land playing "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'", one of the many Harold Land tracks on Spotify. You don't hear Jone's name mentioned these days (he died in 1996) but he was a fine Clifford Brown inspired trumpet player who deserved to be given a lot more acclaim. Harold Land too - he was a superb tenorman in the hard blowing Hank Mobley, early Trane style. So,...
