Henry Threadgill's new release is not music for everyone, but it is music for anyone. This is a difficult review to write, knowing that the folks who follow Henry Threadgill are likely already aware of (or in possession of) this new release -- his first in eight very long years. On the other hand, this is an easy review to write, since it is pretty painless to recommend exceptional music. So let it...

Alto saxophonist and composer Henry Threadgill hasn't issued a CD since 2001, an unusually long silence for a musician of his stature, but "This Brings Us To, Volume 1" has been worth the wait (**** out of four stars, Pi Recordings, out Oct. 27). The album is a major achievement.
