Joe Pass was born Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalaqua in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. By the time he was 13, Pass was soloing along with a local group that rendered homage to Django Reinhardts quintet. At 14, he went on the road with a big band led by Tony Pastor, who gave him a featured spot.
