Just when you thoght there were enough best-of lists around, up come the 2010 Grammy Nominations. On a first inspection no Brits apart from John McLaughlin (any more?) but the French do make a few showings: not least veteran pianist Martial Solal , who was out making new fans in his 80's at Kings Place. Also up there is John Patitucci's trio CD Remembrance, which Dylan Howe was ecstatic about here...
Sunday night is a good night for something from one of the greatest trumpet players who ever lived. This is his version of “Birdland”, originally done by Weather Report (written by the incomparable Joe Zawinul). It’s probably my favorite version of the song. The club about which the song was written is still around (though [...]
We Want Miles is at the Cité de la Musique in Paris until Jan. 17, 2010 and we will be there . Miles Davis in Paris opens up another music and place path. Miles' Joaquín Rodrigo inspired album Sketches of Spain featured in a post last year in which I asked was Rodrigo was out of step with his time musically and politically ? Which has a certain topicality as Rodrigo was born on November...

This is "Birdland" (by MF alum Joe Zawinul) in the original Maynard band arrangement. Maynard is in full force of nature mode here, as throughout the 70's, even as record label Columbia (now Sony) increasingly commercialized his music. The band always kicked butt live, though. Eric Traub on tenor sax. Nice performance here by the MF band, if not ultra-clean. I don't know why I do anything...
The first edition of Manhattan Transfer was formed in 1969 by Gene Pistilli, Tim Hauser, Erin Dickins, Marty Nelson, and Pat Rosalia, splitting after one album. Hauser reformed the band in 1972 and, with {{Janis Siegel = 4314}}, Laurel Masse, and Alan Paul, established the group in New York, playing several club dates. The Manhattan Transfer (Atlantic, 1975), on which they used jazz musicians including...
Recorded in 1966, produced by David Axelrod. Maybe Cannonball's most popular LP. Though the title says "Live at The Club" and the liner notes even say it is recorded at the Club DeLisa in Chicago, in reality the show took place at Capitol's Hollywood studio with an invited audience (and a bar). Cannonball did this for publicity as a favor for the owner of The Club, a friend of his. A more...
The journey from the beginning of Joe Zawinul’s life in 1932 to its end in 2007 is a short Viennese stroll. Certainly no more than the briefest of tram-rides. His first home was in a council flat in the 3rd, Landstrasse, district of Vienna; his grave is in the Zentralfriedhof in the adjacent 11th district. Where, incidentally, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, J . Strauss I [...]
I found it!! A while ago I asked if anyone could think of a hip-hop track which used a sample from Cannonball Adderley's Walk Tall.. this was it- Arrested Development's Kneelin' at my altar. I just love the loop on this. No thanks to The Breaks, which had the sample confusingly listed as Joe Zawinul's "Baby, that's what I need", which was the Esther Marrow vocal version. Here's the Adderley...
Experienced crate diggers need not be reminded of Joe Zawinul’s keyboard mastery. Those not familiar with his work should take a moment to watch the circa 1985 profile and learn about the legendary Weather Report keyboardist.
