This evening we went to the George & Dragon in Thames Ditton to see the John Barnes quartet, but John was absent so the musicians were Terry Ede (tenor sax, Soprano sax, clarinet and flute, pictured), Alan Berry (keyboard, pictured), Mick Durelle (string bass) and Don Cook (drums). Jim Trimmer (vocals, pictured) joined the band for two numbers. The numbers we enjoyed most were: 1) Recado , about...

Seth Rogovoy, author of Bob Dylan: Prophet, Mystic, Poet, wrote yesterday about Bob Dylan’s Judaism. He is guest-blogging all week for MyJewishLearning and the Jewish Book Council. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Bob Dylan’s Christmas album is that it took nearly fifty years for him to make one. There is a long-established tradition of pop [...]

SUNDAY IN NEW YORK is a very funny early '60s romantic comedy somewhat in the tradition of Doris Day and Rock Hudson's films. I liked this movie from the moment Mel Torme started singing the title song over the opening credits. The film has a good score by Peter Nero, who has a cameo late in the movie. The film is set entirely on, you guessed it, a Sunday in New York. Eileen (Jane Fonda) arrives in...

If there's anyone else out there who is as obsessed with Slim Gaillard as I am, you might enjoy some of Slim's tunes sung by no less than Mel Torme, backed by swingin' big band, at Scoredaddy's . Odd, yes, but delightfully satisfying. Plus, I've been needing a version of the Hut Sut Song for my very own, and that's here too.

What planet are these reviewers from? Are they too cool to admit how irredeemably dreadful Bob Dylan's new holiday album really is? Rolling Stone lays it on thick: "The effect is like a Woodstock snowfall with the defiance of 1970's...

Based on my Seinfeld scholarship and the citations below, I would say Mel crooooons sooooooo smoooooth. Beyond that, further research is needed. I can’t do everything for you people, though I would agree to personally evaluate the Mel Tormé of coffee.

Which post-Jewish [...]
